Dear Auntie BCF...

I have a problem with a neighbour in the house that backs on to mine. What appeared to be a pleasant family moved in last year after renovating their new house and all was fine and dandy.

I have a large pine tree in the rear corner of my garden which stands about 2 feet from the dividing fence. I noticed that it had been pruned to within an inch of it's life on their side. I understand that they can prune overhang but were a bit naughty in not consulting me. This is not the problem.

Tonight I've seen that there is now a bird box, washing line and light fitting attached to my tree!

I don't wish to stir trouble with a neighbour (and something tells me the hubby could be a real arsehole if he wanted) so how would you sensible people deal with this matter?

If I was the freeloading type, I could always splice into the light power source to run the pumps on my fishpond.

Cut it down and let that corner of the garden rejoice.

Use the washing line, bird box and light fitting to kill them.

Make it look like a strangle wank gone wrong.

Tell them that the tree has some kind of pine tree disease and needs to be removed, you are letting them know as you can see that they have attached some things to your tree and you don't want them to get damaged/lost.

Never do anything about the tree.

Or just take them down. The bird box and washing line that is, not your neighbours.

Why don't you just knock the door and politely ask them to take there stuff off your tree?

They can buy a washing pole like everybody else.

Disconnect cable to light and attach to fence somehow.

Make the noise of a Giant Ibis to attract them to the birdbox and hope they lean on the fence.

Then when they are all buzzing with convulsions, do a dance with a pair of his wifes knickers on your head, gusset over the nose.

Thumbs Up

I have looked at this in great detail.
All trees are subject to A Tree Preservation Order .
You cannot cut overhanging branches in any manner that will harm the tree or cause any un-balance.
You cannot remove a tree.

You must have permission from the local authority to cut down trees.

Normally only after it is established there is disease or imminent risk to personal or building's safety.

You can remove the bird box. (But not a bat box)
You can remove the washing line (but make it look like "The wind must have did it Mrs.")

^^^Not all trees have a TPO but you need to check to see if someone has placed one upon it. Anybody can see a tree and ask for a TPO on it.

Place a can of baked beans in the bird house (if it's the type of box that can be opened easily) No reason for the baked beans, just going for a random approach that would make them think WTF?

Can you define "a light fitting", though ...

Is it a security light, an outdoor-entertainment light, or just a decorative light?

Add a disco ball in front of the light...

If it's a security light, fix something to it that you can remotely control to keep making it come on...

... do this after changing the bulb to one with the power of a small sun.

Within reason most of that stuff wouldn't bother me that much, long as they ask first.

Just doing it is a bit off, especially if its easy to see the tree is yours.

Actually the light and line would annoy me. Cut the wire!

Oh, and pictures!

If you like your neighbour and get on well, then the below is not relevant, but as that is not the case.

NEVER directly confront your neighbour about something contentious, the goal is to maintain that arms-length level of respect, the "morning, lovely day" contact that does not result in "would you mind looking after my cat for 3 weeks" later on or the procrastinated ballache of bad feeling that is created from the "would you mind undoing the thing you did".

They have already shown they don't give two figs about respect. They did not speak to you about pruning the tree and have trespassed and tampered with your space.

Are these items doing any harm? No, then don't do anything about them directly. Instead, throw some paint stripper over their car and very strong weed killer over their lawn. Don't get caught and maintain the smiley neighbour routine.

NEVER brake from character. Plausible dependability is the name of the game Smile

You should run some horrid liquid along the washing line while clothes are on there. Or pretend the tree bled a lot and broke the light, (some sap like substance inside or all over the light looking like it came from a branch that was cut.)

Awaaaaay..... Razz
