Hello and a question about theory test!

Evening all,

I recently acquired my CBT - it was really enjoyable and a worthwhile experience - my first time on 2 wheels.

I'm planning on going for unrestricted license rather than getting a 125, and looking at spreading intensive-ish learning over Jan/Feb then maybe get a bike in March if all goes well.

I have my theory next week. I've been driving for about 7 years but not sure how useful that will be.

I wondered if anyone can recommend a book with the questions / answers? When I got my car theory there were books with all the questions / answers so I just memorised them all which seemed the easiest way to pass.

I've seen some links to hazard perception tests, I'll be practicing them too.

I bought the official dvsa book and dvd from eBay for £20

Installed the software on my Mac and went away with work for two weeks and forgot to take the disk came back from work and did my theory the next morning scoring 46/50 on the questions and 70/75 (I think) on hazard perception. I was sure I was going to fail

First mod1 lesson on Saturday !!!! And I'll get to see my teapot too !!

You could probably pass the theory without the need for the DVD as it's just a giant memory game and common sense. The hazard however requires you to learn their system and when to click.

The most common complaint with the hazard perception is from people with previous road experience (like car drivers). They all tend to click too early because they're much more used to anticipating hazards. I guess the test is geared towards noobs who will take a bit longer to suss out what's going on.

The trick is to clock the hazard and click, wait a second and click again, wait another second and click again. (Count thousand-one or whatever to gauge the 1-second delays.) If you just click loads of times, it'll spot that and give you a zero score for that clip. If you pace your 2 or 3 clicks, you don't get penalised, and you're much more likely to get a click in the 5-sec or 4-sec band.

The DVSA DVD is well worth getting - loads of clips to practice with, and you can play them back to see when you clicked compared to when it expected the clicks. (That's how I found out I was clicking too early.)

Just click when there's a hazard or when a hazard develops, keep it simple, don't worry about clicking however many times within whatever time bands. It's not complicated.

Hazard perception is aimed at inexperienced teenagers, but it's really just a computer game, and like any game practice will beat it. As an experienced road user you'll need to practice the game in order to think down to a teenagers level. So £20 on a practice computer game is money well spent.

I did mine today. As per the posts above, it's not something to worry about. Hazard perception is the harder section, but again, just click when you see the hazard then again a second later and you will be fine. I got a solid 62/75.
As for the multi choice bit. Well, if you already drive it is just common sense really. Maybe brush up on the official stopping distance and minimum tyre treads and you will have no issues. There are virtually no bike specific questions either and those that are on there are pretty basic, so I don't know why it is required tbh

best thing that helped me was an app on my phone that gave me mock tests. First theory test i failed by 1 point as i was a bit cocky thinking driving for nearly thirty years would be preperation enough. so got an app and just used for the week runing up to the theory and passed no problem.

If you have only been driving 7 years, then you have probably already done a theory for your car test yeh?

There are plenty of apps to download for free that go through most of the motorcycle specific questions, although you can purchase the full versions if you want to. Also as mentioned above, there are websites that do the hazard perception tests, which are easier than they sound. Don't get too hung up on them if you fail the online tests.

I passed my driving test in '91 so never done any theory prior to my motorcycle theory test this year and i had 1 question wrong in multiple choice & 2 marks short in the perception tests, just from using the apps. Just revise the questions and you will be fine...... Good luck

Hi there, passed my theory (again) last week, used the 'Theory Pro' app for iPhone to learn - did try few, this one seemed stable enough, but in all fairness, they're all the same. The paid version came with the Hazard Perception, which - by the way - has changed a bit, it was all films on the app and it's all computer generated graphics on the test - I think it's a bit easier as it's more clunky than real life, easier to spot hazards, etc. Not a hard thing to pass, don't overclick it as it can void the video if you click too much, but normally it's one main thing per video they aim for, giving you more points the earlier you click to notify the system you've identified the hazard.
