I have a 4 stroke moped and its telling me on the dash that I need an oil change, how long can I ignore the warning and instead just top up the oil when needed? Also another quick question, what coolant is best for me to use as its liquid cooled?

Thanks in advance. Thumbs Up

Since it's the festive season, I'll tell you what you want to hear.

You can ignore it indefinitely, just like its previous owners did.

What could possibly go wrong?

Touchy.

Change oil to prevent excessive engine wear.

Don't change oil to increase engine wear.

Have no oil to completely cease engine wear.

There's no concrete answer as to what damage will be done, if any, if you don't change it for another thousand miles or so.

I'll give you a serious answer.

Your motorcycle should be treated like a lady. The love of your life. Yes you should service her regularly to keep her purring.

While you do not need to change the oil, since you seem to have no idea, but it is a bit like going in dry. Eventually it hurts. Nice to get the parts lubricated and all that.

But ultimately. When your engine seizes it is not going to hurt me at all when you fall off.

I'm a bit confused. You do know it's a question without a definitive answer don't you? So what responses did you expect?

It would help if you say the exact make and model.

Most oil change lamps are just connected with the odometer and get on after certain mileage.

I have to say changing oil based on miles is NOT an exact science. 100-200 miles will not make any difference.

Having said that top up the oil takes the same effort like changing the oil. I have to ask as I am genuinly interested, why do you do not want to change it?

Considering your two questions on here have been how to buy a bike for £100 and do I really need to change my oil I think people have been quite nice to you.

Ok, i'm new to vehicles with digital dashes and warning lights that mean something, but is this some error code or such on the display explicitly saying to change oil, or is it the red light with the "lamp that genies live in" drawn on it that I'm led to beleive means oil pressure warning. My one of these comes on whenever the engine is not running and I understand this is what is supposed to happen.

Yeah, I'm still full of "look, that's my clock, and that's the fuel gauge, trip meter 1 is counting miles since I filled the tank becasue that's what i did when i didn't have a fuel gauge and i dont know what im counting with trip meter 2". Such luxuary.

The oil change note won't go away just because you change the oil.
There will be a sequence of turning on ignition while holding a button or something which the 'qualified mechanic' would do to turn off the note after he changed it for you.
All it has done is note your mileage has passed the scheduled point.
You could turn it off yourself if it bothers you and do the change when convenient.

There is a school of thought that even the recommended intervals are a bit long considering bikes only take a small amount of oil so the cost of doing it yourself is rather trivial.
On the other hand manufacturers are probably being quite cautious and have to bear in mind that some users will give the motor hell every time they go out on it.
Either way it's only a guide.
A lot of bikes don't do huge mileage annually especially in winter, and get a service more like once a year - regardless of mileage. Mine for example.

I'm wondering what make and model this could possibly be?

Most mopeds I have seen, only have an amber oil pressure warning light that comes on with the ignition and goes off when the engine is running - I can't think of any that have a specific light to tell you when to change the oil.

My car has oil level and pressure lamps, and a 'Service Indicator' that is driven by engine run time and distance covered - do mopeds have these too?

It will show a message (in text) on the LCD I expect, this is quite common on quad bikes too, at least Honda ones.

Putting concrete in instead of oil would certainly ensure damage is not done, probably by locking everything solid.

the straight answer is, you ought to change the oil as soon as possible, however it will likely last a few more days until you're able to do so.

best check the oil is topped up to last you until then

people have completely guessed, but could be an LCD display that's showing the oil change is due, I have also seen a yellow yellow warning genie lamp (looks like 1950's oil can) on cars.

The oil light you refer to on your bike is a "there isn't oil pumping around the engine, this is bad" light attached to a sensor, if the engine is not running, the oil pump isn't pumping oil, as you've seen the light goes out a few seconds after starting the engine. If engine is running and light comes on, stop.

Or... are there Honda 2-stroke peds with a separate oil tank with a low warning light?
