So I picked up the bandit today. Great ride home. Stopped at tesco halfway for petrol, comfort break and waht passes for coffee for their cafe. Was disappointed to find out that my Mammoth shackle lock won't fit on the disks. I have the bike chained up at the moment, but for out and about I habitually use a disk lock as a joyride deterrent.

Suggestions for something small, useful and economically priced in the way of disklocks?

Have hatred of battery powered alarmed disklock things. I don't need telling it's raining, i live in Yorkshire.

I use a Zena Disc Lock with built-in alarm, and it has lasted through all weathers over 7 years.

I don't know if the alarm works, as I never bothered fitting the batteries.

There are many others available, but If you do get one, get a 'reminder' cable for it.

Will it fit round a wheel "spoke"?

Actually, Googling, it looks like a fat 3 spoker, right? Sad

Yep, 3 fat spokes.

https://cdn.bikechatforums.com/files/bandit.jpg

I usually carry one of these:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mammoth-Security-11mm-Shackle-Disc/dp/B00GDFXPTY

I also have a craptastic oxford which also doesn't fit https://www.amazon.co.uk/Oxford-Sold-Secure-Motorcycle-Shackle/dp/B0056GUOVI/

and several padlocks that will just fit one or two links of chain through them depending on whether the chain is huge or really huge.

Right now I'm stuck with chains, and I think that's overkill.

Nope, tried it on the rear as well. It's not happening. Burnt myself on the exhaust for my trouble to.

But whats a first day with a bike if it doesnt burn you or draw blood? Tomorrow is alarm and perhaps the electrics for the heated grips and satnav. There will be blood then.

Just fit it through the larger gaps in the disc.

You don't have to feed it through one of the small circular holes.

Don't think so, but the Xena X1 (which is the affordable V shaped lock) got discontinued. I have the X1 and it is well worth the money if you can find somewhere with stock remaining.

I had a wrestle with the oxford mini D shackle thing. Have managed to get that to fit at both ends. I think i was tired yesterday and not doing joined up thinking in the dark. I have wrestled the cat/child scaring alarm in today. It's a bit quick and dirty, the led is taped to the rear master cylinder and it doesnt flash the indicators, but it squeals if you look at it funny and goes off if you move the bike or the ignition goes live. It's making me feel less nervous anyway. I suspect its more secure without the indicators connected anyway, at least until i get some inline fuses in there.

Here's a thought for the disc lock. If I was to hot wire the bike and unbolt the brake disc bolts would I be able to ride the bike away? Would I even need to take the wheel off? Obviously I is no thief so wouldn't do it like but just interested.

I lock the rear sprocket and chain now as it means someone would have to either cut the lock or stick the bike in a van to take it.

Unbolt brake disk, and push away, not sure riding away would be successful. Same would apply for unbolting rear sprocket. That's what makes the front brake a better one to secure.

If a thief has tools to unbolt brake disk, disable alarm and hotwire bike, or has cunningly found the tools to do so under the seat, the bike is gone. Thief has van and some accomplices, bike is gone.

Any device will deter thievery upto a certain level. It's a case of how far is reasonable to go. At home, ground anchor and chain is no problem. Beyond that its what can be carried to make anyone considering stealing it pick an easier target.

Whenever I leave the 636 I have a basic disclock on it but I don't know why.

The technique here is to tip the bike onto a mattress and put it in a van.

But they wouldn't be able to ride it away. I don't think it would be that easy to push it either as the bolts would be sticking out of the hub so you would need to tie the sprocket to the swing arm quite well.

I know it won't stop everybody but makes it more difficult.

I've lived plenty of places where things go missing if they are not secured in someway becasue low level opportunistic crime. I'll agree that a 2002 bandit is unlikely to be lifted into a van because someone desperately wants one on the cheap, unlike anything new and mildly prestigous.

But knackered 125s, half-dead scooters and similarly shit cars go missing becasue easy to steal and localish wildlife is bored.

Had a friend make me a ramp today so i can get bandit up the kerb and through the gate at girlfriend's house. Previous bikes have been slim enough to ride onto the pavement at a drop kerb and turn into gate. One of the key design features was a loop on the underside through which a chain may be passed. This way i do not have to negotiate with girlfriend over keeping ugly metal thing in house and it is unlikely to end up as old iron.
