Is losing the battery cover a common thing or am i just unlucky? Went to collect the bandit today. I'm busy packing my lock and a few emergency items (like the lock that doesn't fit) under then seat when i notice there is nothing retaining the battery. Turns out it's supposed to have a big plastic cover that forms a second storage bucket for yet more tat/tools/sandwiches. It's nowhere to be found in the workshop. There is one ordered and it's secured for the meanwhile.

I'd think nothing of it, only the battery cover and rubber strap was missing from my 535 as well, which caused the electrics to intermittently fail as the battery moved and bashed terminals agaisnt the frame. I failed to spot the cause as did an rac contractor who claimed to have owned a 535. Genuine rac man worked it out and zip ties sorted it.

Battery out of the garage queen and on maintnance charger in the kitchen over winter? Fiddly plastic lost by previous owner?

I know that on a car, missing battery covers and securing straps will result in an MOT fail - so maybe they are important.

There's a lot of energy contained in a battery, and you wouldn't want it floating around loose, or risk having something metallic falling on the terminals!

I can only guess if they lose the battery cover it's because bike has been worked on and then just left unused for a few years and so parts got lost.

Unsecure certainly, but missing cover? Really?

It would make sense due to possibility of shorting battery terminals.

A cap on the positive will suffice, you don't need a cover for that.

[edit] From the manual :-

As per manual, if the battery is secure nothing needs covering at all for MOT.

I currently have 3 cars and 1 bike (on the road) and all of them have been through multiple MOT tests with completely exposed battery terminals.

Isn't it strange how both bikes passed MOTs like that?

3 years ago I had padgetts being proper rude about such a failing. This time around the dealership were clearly embarassed and were falling over themselves to sort it out. Somewhere between discovering that and my very careful guarding of the key, which the mechanic was determined to leave under the seat they sent off for a spare key for me as well. Appleyards may be on the pricey side but every time i have dealt with them they have made me feel like i matter.

In my case, the battery cover is actually part of the floor just in front of the driver's seat (Mercedes A Class), and I hadn't bothered to refit it after charging the battery minutes before taking it for an MOT. The MOT tester refused to test it, and I had to go back home and find the damn thing.

But it doesn't fail for it, the tester just considered it unsafe to test.

Guess I will never know - but I'm pretty sure they would have charged me the test fee and issued a Fail Cert if I hadn't done anything about it.
