So had my first mod1 lesson on Saturday and left thoroughly disheartened

I cannot get slow control right I either don't get the clutch right or not using enough rear brake or using too much rear brake

I suck at u turns too setting off to slowly or setting off ok and then getting the turn wrong

Thoroughly frustrated and it's another two weeks before I can have another lesson due to the holidays

Will it click naturally and quickly ? Or how do I get it to click?

Thank you and apologies for the rant

What's your previous experience? If only CBT, how did that go?

I'd assume that you've gone straight from a CBT to DAS with no previous riding experience?

Time and practice, how much of both is down to you.

Master slow control in a straight line first and then attempt U-Turns don't put to much pressure on yourself trying to learn things you may not be ready for, can be counter productive.. make sure the training school are giving you as much time as you need to practice what you're not good at, after all it's your money they're burning through.

Head up and looking where you want to end up on both manoeuvres is important.

I was hopeless at the slow speed Mod 1 stuff, luckily on the day it came together and I passed, but that was mainly down to ignoring what the instructor had told me. Personally controlling the bike with the rear brake feels unnatural, I mainly use the clutch and front brake if needed... when the instructor wasn't looking Wink

U-turns are tricky, I did my DAS with a super experienced pal (years of big bike and courier experience), and even he struggled with them. Don't get too disheartened, you've only had one lesson, plenty of time to practice.

I have never habitually used the rear brake for slow speed control. And yet here I am, licensed up.

Throttle and clutch are sufficient for all the mod 1 hoop-jumping. No need to give yourself a third thing to worry about. If your instructor starts getting shoutyface about doing it "right", remember who's paying the piper.

Just remember to look where you want the bike to go. The u turn is just another hoop you have to hop through. I failed mod 1 first time coz i put my foot down. That was because i was not looking where I wanted the bike to go, but looking at the white lines and not being gentle with the rear brake. Eventually it will click though. Good luck.

A cheap 125 to practise on would bring you on leaps and bounds.

It will come with time. I was proper shit at clutch control when i started riding. But i got it soon enough.

If you have access to a bicycle, practice slalom and figure of 8s on that. Concentrate on looking where you want to go and keeping the bicycle moving above walking pace.

I quite like the back brake for slow speed manouvres, holding a steady engine speed (perhaps 4000 rpm on a bandit, somewhere above idle but below screaming), modulate clutch to control forwards motion keeping it in the slip zone. Going a bit quick? Dab a little back brake and squeeze the clutch. Off the throttle and both brakes if a bit quick turns into need to stop now.

Some bikes will potter around on idle. You can pass a test like that, but something sporty with tall gears will give you problems. You'll only have to unlearn when you want to get about briskly.
