PostPosted: 14:31 - 18 Dec 2015    Post subject: SV650s K3 - Losing oil, but where is it going? Reply with quote

Hello,

My SV650s is drinking oil but I don't know where it might be going.
No oil stains on the floor or oily crud on the bike.

I need to add 100ml every week to top it up to the proper level.

I can only assume it's being burned off somehow.

What might be causing this? What should I check?

Many thanks

Out the exhaust via the piston rings valve guides.

YOu must ensure it's not a leak.
Park it on top of a clean card or double newspaper and see whats there in the morning.

100ml 'may' be acceptable depending on miles run. Engines are designed to use oil. It is a consumable wear part.
It serves a sacrificial seal.

My K1300 guzzles the shit and is a none issue with some BMWs. But the OEM assures us all that it is acceptable.
Maybe 500ml per <1000 miles.
My BMW litre bike never uses much.

If you can whip the rocker cover off you can easily check for valve guide wear by pusing the valve spring left to right and see if there is 'any' slack. There should be no 'appreciable' slack. Very Happy

Cheers, guys, it's good to know.

It's due a service in January, so I'll let the professionals have a look at it.

Thanks.

If it's not leaking, it'll probably cost you more to fix than it's really worth spending on the bike.

My XJ600 used to guzzle down fuel. It drank around 4L over 2200 miles. Despite that, the bike never mechanically failed on me for the entire year that I was abusing it.

I never did figure out the issue. I gambled and spent the money to replace my valve stem seals (did it myself) as I had very good compression. If I had done rings too, it'd have been more expensive in parts than a spare engine. It was still just as bad as before.

How many miles do you cover in a week?

Make sure the breather pipe (between crankcase and airbox) isn't blocked or kinked.

If the breather is fine, then you have a problem.

100 ml per about 600 miles would be still considered to be alright in my book. But I guess you don't cover that much in a week.

Check the air box is not filled with oil.

My SV starts to burn / lose oil at around 100ml every 2 weeks when the oil has been in there for 3-4k miles

As soon as it's replaced with fresh stuff, it won't burn any (maybe 100ml in 3 months) until the next 3k miles.

Don't worry about it, keep topping it up and enjoy your riding. Years ago I had the misfortune to own a Norton Commando that used some oil. The factory told me that 200 miles per pint (!) consumption was acceptable. It might have been for them but it wasn't for me.

I only do about 150 miles per week.

So, it looks like this is a fairly common issue and as long as I keep it topped up the bike should be OK?

I never had to do it on my trusty YBR125...

Thanks for all your responses!

Dan

This is telling you something about your oil & change intervals Wink

Not loading the engine sufficiently can cause heavier oil consumption.

The liners and ring polish.

The wrong oil grade can cause it too.

Suzuki say change it at 4k or 1y and I have been around 3000 - 3500 miles, which for this bike is 9 months.

Been using Castrol 10w40 semi, might consider trying fully synth, but not sure if I want to be that extravagant Smile

mmm, Opie has 4l of Shell Advance 10w40 semi for £20 inc shipping
Much cheaper than Halfords. Don't mind changing it out at 3k for that price.

That is so 1980's, Razz

The manual for my GPz had exactly the same oil change interval. Mind you it was a 80's air cooled engine, so the gaps between the moving parts were huge.
