Hi all,

On 30/11 my bike was knocked over while parked and marked the front of another car. The driver (according to a witness who didn't get a registration) got out, looked at my bike and drove off.

Now, a Lidl camera may have been pointing at the car when this happened. I left a note on the marked car, went to the police station and told them that they should be able to find the culprit if they check CCTV.

Long story short, the police have got back to me to say they don't check CCTV in damage only cases and the guy's boss wants my insurance details. Am I liable for the damage to his car? It's a small scratch towards the bottom of the bumper where the screen scraped and then smashed.

Thanks guys Smile

Why you noted anything to the other driver amuses me. I'd simply state that no, you aren't giving your details as this is nothing to do with him or you, its the other driver, speak to MIB, do one etc etc etc

Oh, joy, you get to use one of their favourite lines:

"That's a civil matter, it's got nothing to do with the police."

Do the arms too! Folded arms

Although as satisfying as it would be, I actually wouldn't say a damn thing to them, or to anyone else.

Do you have the witness details though? I'd keep them handy just in case.

Yeah, I noted it to the driver because I thought it was the right thing to do when submitted a police report. What a fool I am.

In what way have you been negligent?

Probably that, although I'd heard that in the event of a multiple vehicle pile-up, insurers tend to ripple liability forwards rather than putting it all on the villain that smashed in the back door.

Myth?

Thanks for your help guys, I'm gonna tell him I'm seeking advice before handing anything over. Have requested a copy of the footage myself so fingers crossed it helps identify the person responsible.

As you're not being accused of a criminal offence, I would urge you to have no further contact with the police.

If you were being accused of a criminal offence, I would urge you to have no further contact with the police.

Unless the car is owned by a senior mason or a big donor to the Retirement Fund, they'll have no real interest in it.

Yeah, have done now. They have 40 days to give it to me under whichever act such things fall under.

https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-data-protection/principle-6-rights/subject-access-request/

Best of luck with it.

InB4 "footage of a vehicle is not personal data"; or "footage of a vehicle is personal data, therefore we need to blank out the other vehicles".

In the latter case, see https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1998/29/section/29

Thanks Rogerborg, second link could come in useful. I told them that I believed they filmed me/my motorbike so hopefully it will show the car. We shall see, not holding out too much hope!

I've heard of this happening:

Front person claims off person behind (2), person 2 claims off person behind (3) for himself and for recovery of 1 claim, 3 claims off person behind (4) for himself and for recovery of 1&2 claims - and so on until they run out of persons.

As for what actually happens compared to what I've heard?
