I'm sure there are some knowledgeable IT people on here, and I'm not one of them!

My present virus protection subscription end soon.
What's the best one for Windows 10?

I haven't done a search as I know the quality changes release to release/ year to year.

AVG, Avast, Kaspersky etc etc have all become so fucking bloated again I have started using ClamWin

I just use microsoft anti malware. It's the least bloated and the most integrated with the OS.

The neighbours here know I'm a bit of a geek and knocked on the door a month or two back, they'd managed to pick up a piece of ransomware and started to panic. I explained what had happened and told them to drop the laptop to me that weekend. It all went quiet.

Fast forward six weeks and I bump into the husband and ask what had happened, why they hadn't brought the laptop over as discussed. It transpires that rather than wait a day or two (I was insanely busy) they went to PC world who fitted a new HDD and sold them a copy of Norton AV.

I honestly didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

No it wasn't. But it was on a very cheap deal with a new laptop (ASUS X555L).

I'd asked a few friends for their thoughts and although some of them are at least IT literate, none of them are anywhere near experts.
All sorts of recs but the AVGs good (from one) vs AVGs crap (from another) was typical, so I picked the easy and cheap'ish route.
Now I'm hoping the experts on here don't give me such conflicting advice to confuse my simple brain.... Confused

Have about 100 clients, were using AVG business (was the only one you could run froma Linux server with a central console, but since changed and we were too busy to change it when it came for renewal). We ran some tests, what AVG ignored, Avast jumped all over. Most I remember was 66 actual threats (malware, and virus) on a laptop not found by AVG, but found and sorted painlessly by Avast.

I'm not recommending it though. Shifty

Avast pissed me off.

Not only did they think it was a good idea to ship with spyware/malware, they decided it would be nice if they made their "suite" do everything.

Jesus fucking christ, it's near impossible to find a AV prog that just does AV and not ID protect, web filter, firewall, email, malware etc etc

Why wouldn't I want full protection for 'ID protect, web filter, firewall, email, malware etc etc'?

Personally I've always gone for ESET NOD32.

low system impact, effective, well.. err it works Smile

I couple that with malware bytes and jobs a goodun.

For an added bit of security I also run noscript on my firefox. It can be annoying on a fresh system having to allow lot of sites but once you get through the main lot you use it becomes such a great tool.

Nearly had a panic when I upgraded recently and forgot to back it up. Thankfully I had replaced my ssd rather than re-installed so I chucked it into the PC and grabbed my profile info Smile

Righto.

After about 30mins of faffing about and getting a template sorted on the Avast Server Dashboard thingy, I have got it all pretty much dialled in.

Can't disable the popups from the dashboard, same with the "join the avast community" thing.

But apart from that, it's seems ok.


Oh, I've been forced to add a short cut in the Windows Startup folder so that my Logitech Gaming Software will run at startup.
For some reason, Avast likes fucking with me.

Well. If you consider yourself clever enough not to click on daft links, you KNOW you're on your back's website before you try logging in, you don't need web filtering.
Firewall stops teenagers running a portscan against your computer and then trying it on with any holes left open. Windows has a firewall, use that. Hell, your internet router should have a firewall with 'idiot level' settings for you to use, that's an extra layer of good security sense.

I wouldn't say I'm especially clever on the inter-web but I am scared of it, so I don't do on-line banking (although I will probably do so in the next 6-12 months).
I don't think I click on daft links but I could do if it's not obviously daft.
I think I'm ok with spam/phishing.
In nearly 20 years I haven't picked up a virus (that I became aware of) but I've always had either Norton, Bullguard or Mcafee on my system. Hearing that most protection is system resource hungry I'm beginning to think a less known protection may be better (and cheaper).

For peace of mind I guess I do want 'ID protect, web filter, firewall, email, malware etc etc'.
