Cbr 600 1989. Rev counter works, temp gauge works speedo has stopped working. The cable is in 1 piece so it's either speedo drive or clocks. Is there anyway I can tell which rather than ordering a 'wrong' bit. A second hand set of clocks is about £20 and £15 for a speedo drive. Don't really want to be stuck with a replacement working part.

This bike isn't doing so well at the moment is it.

I am gonna guess the speedo runs off the front wheel?

Start by removing the wheel and drive. Turn the cable and check what speedo does.
If it works, its the drive.

If it doesn't take the cable off at the clocks and turn it again, if the top turns the cable is in one piece, its the clocks.

But I would guess at the cable.

I would remove the cable from the speedo drive and roll the bike forwards a bit to see if the driving tab turns round Thumbs Up

If the cable is still in one piece it's probably going to be the white nylon gear inside your wheel, they wear out and stop spinning the cable. You can pack them out with a washer so an unworn bit makes contact until you can get a new one.

Ok fixed this. It was the cable. It was in one piece but was ceased. New cable in place and all is good.

I raised the front wheel with a borrowed front micron stand and span the front wheel and the connector on the drive span. Reattached the cable and the cable did not spin. New cable span whilst attached to the wheel and once attached to the clocks it worked perfectly.
