Next year I'm looking at getting a decent relatively quick car.

Current top of the pile is a WRX possibly even an STI from around 2006.

A quick look at insurance quotes are coming out about £1500, my fiesta costs £350~ so this is a bit of a shock.

I guess my question are there any tricks to getting cheaper insurance for a quick car? I was think £800 max for the insurance. I don't feel like I'm £1500 worth of risk.

I don't drive a lot and I just want a nice car for a period in my life so I'm not bothered about running costs such as fuel/servicing, but tax and insurance can't be ridiculous.

Shopping around or change your choice of car, scooby's tend to be driven by boy racers who inevitably wrap them round a tree, also once upon a time they were highly sought after by twocer's.

That is what is putting me off getting one, even though they meant to be a fair bit better and insurance isn't any worse.

I had a Caterham Super7 for a while, extremely fast and very capable car - insurance was less than my nearly new Aygo! Laughing

X3... he's not a homo.

M3...yes.

The only cheapish sporty cars I've checked insurance with are Supras and the quite retro Stagea but finding one with no bolt on tat is hard and not everyone likes 500hp estates.

Meh. I don't like cars but a mate of mine (who I would LOVE to see someone call a homo to his face) likes his big, punchy cars and highly rates them.

He's had a sucession of supras and M3s, V8 vauxhalls and such and is frankly terrifying to go in a car with but knows how to go one or he'd have landed up in a ditch by now.

I'd imagine an X3 would probably get around the "chav loading" insurance aspect.

In order to call you a homo, they first have to catch you. Compare the x-drive 35d specs to the WRX.

much tempted myself but would have to park it on the street and use to commute - not sure it's a great plan...

In my experience the UK cars are cheaper to insure than imports, so beware of that.

For me an Evo was cheaper than a WRX too.

The X35d m sport is still going to be slow and barge like. 5.3 to 60 and 152 top end. Unsure on HP figures but the price for one of those used is more than double an 04 sti with 400hp.

That won't help the insurance offset. I'd happily call him a homo for driving an X3. BMW MPV stuff is just hilarity in a bavarian box. Surely simply getting a 130 or 135 is what he wants rather than a gay family wagon.

Yeah.

New X3: 313hp, 630nm and 0.60 in 5.3.
sauce

New WRX Sti: 300hp, 407nm, 0-60 in 5.2.
sauce

Just saying. Razz

0 to 60 is a rubbish measurement of performance.

I would say 40-80mph tells you a better figure as that is where the power is most useful.

You just have to try lost of comparison sites. Try different cars as well.

If you go for an older car then you could save on road tax. gt4?

I hate the look of an x3 so that is out.

I'm after something quick but doesn't have to be mental fast, must be RWD or 4WD , must be a drivers car, manual, good handling etc. Should be at least a 4 seater not a 2+2. Not unreliable, at least mid/high 20's mpg. Absolute max of £10k more like £6-8k. I want something looks sporty, not interested in a sleeper.

Not really interested in BM's TBH I just do not like them.

If you're using comparison sites, don't. Ring specialist brokers. Sky Insurance, Flux, HIC etc.

Oh and do play around with modified versus standard quotes. Sometimes mildly modified cars go on different binders with better rates

Put those criteria into Autotrader, don't specify a make, then see what comes up. I've often wondered whether a big ol' high mileage, high spec Jag would be a good buy.

I did a more realistic Autotrader criteria search recently and the results were all Honda Jazz (Jazzes?) Crying or Very sad I think it was because I'd specified both aircon and a sunroof though, which seems to be rare.
