I live on the 4th floor, which is the top floor, flat of which there is a lift.
When i moved in a year ago i was initially with talk talk and the internet was fine, every now and then it went pretty slow and maybe cut out once or twice a month. Ive now moved over to sky broadband and every day the internet cuts out.
Cut a long story short, the 4th engineer out of which was a bt engineer found that the lift in my block was causing REIN when ever it was in use and cutting out my internet/broadband.
It sounds like this might be a long fix judging by what sky and bt have said.
Does anyone have any advice or expertise that may help me in getting this sorted quickly or any sort of fix i can do or device that will help prevent this affecting my broadband? it seems its the only the internet that is affected and no one else in my block seems to have had any problems...its driving me crazy.
And before anyone suggests, i have already thought about causing the lift to be 'out of use'....

I'm surprised to hear that "no one else" is being affected by this, as REIN faults cause issues indiscriminately within the vicinity of the faulty equipment. So if this is REIN, the problem is independent to you, such as your telephony cable running in a different location to the rest of the flats or not in the correct trunking.

How has this been proved to be a REIN issue? Has a REIN specialist visited the site and confirmed the faulty equipment, or has a standard Broadband training engineer made the "diagnosis" ?

4 engineers, so I imagine one of them has fitted a VDSL/SSFP front plate.

These plates (In MK3 form, check the top right corner) have a basic radio frequency filter than can alleviate the issues of REIN but not a substitute for removing the source or complete isolation from it.

Typical REIN sources

This list is not exhaustive but known and common culprits are:

Faulty thermostats (Central heating, Immersion heaters).
Electrical power supply units (Laptops, Routers, Plasma, TVs).
Decorative electrical items (Christmas tree lights, Touch lights).
Digital Communication Receivers (Satellite and Freeview set top boxes).
Security systems (PIR lights switching on and off).
Fluorescence Lights & Faulty Street Lights
Powerline Adapters & Treadmills
Industrial/Commercial power usage (Electric Railways, Electric fences, Electric motors).
Internal power cables and telecom cables running close together.
A current imbalance between two power carrying conductors (Earth leakage fault)

Surely that would be a issue for the management company to resolve with the lift company.

I would have though that if it was the lift, then your connection would be dropping a lot.

TBH. pop over to Think Broadband Great for this sort of thing.

The engineer was an sri engineer from BT, he plugged the line into his device and checked the readings, he said he has been to this block before because the lift caused internet cut outs, so he tested that first and sure enough the device read mass readings when the lift was in use and it went so high and then cut out.
He has said he will refer it to the REIN team but this could take a while, i have also reported it to my landlord who said they will see what they could do but stated I'm the only one to have reported this...

Yeh they fitted a new socket with the BT open reach, mk 3.

Cheers for the link i will also ask the guys on that forum too.

Does REIN affect the router itself and the high electrical current or the actual phone line? presumably a surge protector would not help?

cheers

SFI Engineer, which is a standard broadband engineer.
So long as that engineer passed on all the details to the REIN team, hopefully it will progress for them to arrange a visit.
Once the REIN team actually identify the specific offending equipment, they will inform the owner that it's causing issues.
Unfortunately beyond that, they cannot force the the repair Sad

So pile on the pressure to your service provider who will in turn pressure Openreach to commit the REIN team to the problem.
Unfortunately you cannot contact Openreach directly, so it's down to your service provider. If this seems to be going nowhere, contact your local MP ... " As a constituent you are disgusted by the delays" ect.

You have two frequencies traveling down the copper pair to your socket, a analogue frequency and a digital frequency.
REIN affects the digital / broadband signal that your modem router needs to establish a internet connection, basically by corrupting the digital signal before it reaches your router. The broadband equipment can deal with a small portion of REIN, but often at the cost of the download speed, so some people maybe blissfully unaware of an issue. However If REIN is frequent/intensive enough it will distort the signal to the extend that the modem can not longer maintain a reliable connection causing a disconnection.
With multiple disconnections, the broadband equipment in the exchange (or the street if your on fruit'n'fibre) will evaluate the line and will likely reduce your max attainable download speed in a bid to provide you with a slow, yet reliable service.

Your Sky hub wants a cup of Tea, but REIN keeps adding too much water!

The SFI/Boost Engineers and the REIN Engineers are the same people in a lot of cases. I've seen instances of an Engineer raising a case to a REIN Engineer, only to go out himself and complete the work/Identify the issue. From what I understand they have a limited number and limited resource since it's a courtesy service (To help the customer identify the issue, since it's not Openreach/BTW causing it)

How hard/expensive would it be to run your own bit of shielded cable up to you from wherever the lines come into the building?

Not sure what the setup is in your building but if it's a smaller building where you're not going to get grief off a concierge and it's all in conduit, it's not necessarily a big or hard job.

You can get 100m reels of shielded, twisted-pair cable for £50 or so.

Or can you get 4G and sack the broadband off altegether?

A mate of mine had a problem with his broadband, shortly after the electric company installed Smart Metering in his apartment block.

The signal came in on a 4 pair STP cable, but there was no continuity between the shielding and the building's electrical earth, so I connected the shield to the earth of an adjacent power socket.

This didn't fix it completely, but did make a significant difference to the number of dropouts.
