Many many threads/posts ago I replied in a thread about diesel bikes, that I thought the motor from the Diuhatsu/Dewoo could be suitable/compact enough to be used in a bike frame and low-and-behold someone has gone and done it!

I know this is a one off, but it shows it can be done.
I would have no problem finding a space in my garage for that.
Top speed of the little Dewoo is about 80mph? , and a bike frame weighs a whole lot less than a car chassis/frame, so I guess that bike should be good for a bit more?

I would really like to see that bike in action to see if it is really a viable concept for a bike.

WE will never know if nobody tries? , I think it`s about trying new concepts and overcoming technical difficulty.
Think about the early days of engines ie single cylinder, and then someone had the radical idea to make two cylinders and then three and then four Shocked .

The fiesta ecoboost claims 65mpg. I don't think there's many 125hp bikes that match that, and that's while its towing 1100kg of metal behind it. Would be interesting to see how far a gallon could push a 200kg bike and it would still have a respectable level of power.

You do know that the Indian version of Enfield has been churning out diesel versions of motorbikes since I was about 15?

someone somewhere will get diesel bikes right one day and it will open up a whole new chapter in the evolution of motorbikes.

Why this is still news i dunno.

Been possible to make a normal looking diesel bike for donkies.

What holds it back is a mix of luddites and the fact bikes ceased being vehicles for any real purpose a long time ago.

It`s not really ground breaking news , more thinking about alternatives?
Personally I`d rather ride a diesel engined bike than an electric bike, based on what I see and read at this moment.

If someone told you 20 years ago that diesel engined cars would be competing at Le-Man and sometimes winning Shocked you would of dismissed them (possibly)
My point being is that just because bikes are no longer utility, does`nt mean that they must be only petrol powered.
People talking about it and swapping ideas and people in their sheds doing projects will/may come up with the solution to make them viable for ordinary bikers.

I think like most manufacturer figures they're being a bit ambitious, looks like the real figure could be closer to 40mpg, but that's a good point regarding weight. Speaking of weight the ecoboost engine's nearly 100kg, when a litre bike engine looks to be around 60kg.

I think those ecoboost engines cost a fair bit as well. Still if I had the engineering nous and money I'd like to see how it turned out.

The late Ernie Dorsett produced several Diesel bikes. latterly Indian Enfields fitted with small Japanese motors. 'Performance' was tragic, followed him once going up a slope heading towards Whitchurch, he 'accelerated' I think, the only difference was the exhaust note it went from a phut phut to booming thud thud and nothing else. The only advantage I suspect was fuel fill-ups, perhaps a couple a year !.

IIRC there is one fairly nippy oil fuelled motorcycle, though to be fair it feeds the oil (Kerosine) into an ex-helicopter jet engine.

But what's the value in it?

At least the diesel racers had a trickle down effect on road engines (and they only started as a marketing exercise) but I'm struggling to see the real world relevance of an oil burning bike, when you can buy a petrol bike that's capable of travelling at our highest speed limit, returning over 100mpg and looking and handling like a normal bike.

I appreciate the efforts of the people who cobble them up, I'd be tempted to do it myself, if I had the time and money on my hands, but only if I knew I could end up with something that was worth riding.

As far as mass production goes, I can only see it as blind alley for major manufacturers, especially as diesel is rapidly becoming the devil's fuel.
