Unless you're absolutely flush with cash, I wouldn't be looking at a relatively new MT-07, especially if you're going to ride it restricted. 35kW is 35kW - you'll be paying more to restrict it more.
Something older, cheaper and pikier, ride out your 2 years of purgatory, then go full power.
Fazer, ER6, Gladius, SV650, Bandit, Divvy, CBF600, maybe even one of the 500 twins (but you won't be able to use them for your A tests). Enjoy it for what it is, then treat yourself later. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
GONE: HN125-8, LF-250B, GPz 305, GPZ 500S, Burgman 400 // RIDING: F650GS (800 twin), Royal Enfield Bullet Electra 500 AVL, Ninja 250R because racebike |

Thanks for the replies. In response to the questions asked; Budget is pretty flexible with an absolute upper limit of around £5,500 but my preference would obviously be to spend less, especially if it isn't a bike I will necessarily want to keep once I finally get the full 'A'.
My thinking with the MT-07 is that it is a bike that I actually want, not just one which conforms to the A2 requirements, and as such, spending more money on it and keeping it longer might make sense.
However, I must also consider that I am quite likely to drop my first bike, so a cheaper learner machine might be more logical.
On that basis, it would make sense to buy that XJ6N, which looks pretty good in its own right actually, and then put the saved cash towards a bike I want after the restriction ends.
Which leads me to th question: If, for example, I picked up an XJ6N for £2,800ish what would I expect to be able to shift it for in 2 years/10,000miles?
Thanks again,
A. |

If you do it right and take your time to get decent one you can sell it in 2 years for the same price or even more with a profit.
All my second hand bikes I have sold them with profit in 1-2 years.
The key is to buy cheap LOW mileage bike from a private seller and to haggle.
Also check owners forums. You can find there very well serviced bikes.
On the other hand I bought my current Fazer 2003 Foxeye FSZ 600 on impulse no major search at all and with relatively high 30k mileage and no haggling
It was cheap though £1300. I bet I will sell it for more ____________________ Adrian Monk: Unless I'm wrong, which, you know, I'm not...

Well, you'll have to restrict the XJ6 as well, as in fact any 600cc bike I'd imagine. On that basis, the better economy has to be getting the MT07 and restricting that and keeping it, assuming you're sure you're not going want to upgrade again once you pass the A test. Seems a no-brainer if you like the MT07.
p.s. my XJ6 Diversion doesn't exactly light the world on fire as it is, I can't imagine how dull the thing would be to ride restricted, you'd be better off getting a cheap and fun A2 compatible bike that doesn't need the restriction and riding to the limit of its performance envelope for now. |

Alternatively he could buy an A2 compliant bike and restrict it. |
