They're getting a bit low, so what makes/types should I look for without spending stupid money, the 'best' ones are about £44 for four, which seems a bit over the top for mundane commuting?

£44 for front brake pads? Well, you could get them cheaper, but its a bit like sticking a 10 year old tyre on you bike.

So lets look at that £44.00
Thats 4 pads so £11.00 each
Work that that they last 10,000 miles.
How much per mile is that ?

Not much Laughing In fact properly about 10 times less that it costs in petrol per mile..... Karma

Also mundane commuting.... That is where you really need good pads that will work hard & fast Thumbs Up

I use £15 for 2 sets of front pads... I've never really had an issue with commuter braking.

I'd choose a sintered pad for better performance in the wet, although they don't offer the initial bite of the organics.

I've dabbled with different brands and like the current big brand sportstouring tyres it pretty much comes down to personal preference as they're all pretty good.

my local dealer only carries EBC in stock .. but his prices match on-line or better .. and £45 sounds about right for hh sintered.

definitely sintered

thought my gen 1 fazer brakes were ok until the first time I stripped them and one pad on each side was completely stuck, after that I nearly went over the bars the first time I used them in anger

I treat pads a bit like oil,
Buy it cheap and change regulary,
Although im pretty easy on pads,

Pads have never made a difference to me, but I rarely need to stop in a hurry
