PostPosted: 17:46 - 28 Dec 2015    Post subject: Car drivers not looking (minor rant) Reply with quote

Had two today, while enjoying the mild weather and taking the bike for a spin around the Brecons:

1 Pulled out of a side street onto a NSL road, turning right, in front of me going the same direction. Nobody in the oncoming lane, so just swerved around and gave him a horn blast while going past. So far, so much what you expect when riding anyhow, but:

2 Pulls out of a car park, again onto a NSL road, turning right (this time opposite direction), and the car in front of me does all he can to avoid him but plows right into the side of him. So probably about 40mph to a dead stop in no time at all (it's a small miracle nobody wasn't seriously hurt). Can't remember the last time I had to brake that hard, it's a small wonder I remembered to put my foot down when I stopped and didn't just do a comedy tumble off the bike at that point.

Now, I always figured it was just car drivers not bothering to see bikes (1), but (2) somewhat proves that they don't see each other either!

I'd like to think that irrespective of whether I'm riding or driving, I just about manage to remember to look up and down the _high speed road_ I'm about to join to make sure I'm less likely to kill myself and possibly someone else in the next minute or so. This little thing called basic survival instinct, right?

Am I in the minority? Had I been the guy in front (and not the guy behind the guy in front) it would probably have been me on my two wheels having the collision. It puts a certain perspective on things that!

So, you were tailgating the car in front and shat yourself when you got caught out?

Nice job snipping the part of my post out where I managed to come to a controlled stop, nothing like selective quoting to make your point right?

If I was tailgating and the car in front came to a dead stop in a split second (i.e. hit another car sideways, decelerates you real fast that) while going at a reasonable pace, how likely would be to happen? Rolling Eyes

You want me to include the bit where you say you are so potato that you nearly forgot to put you fucking feet down?

Quit frankly, I was doing you a favour but as you insist on bringing it up....

That's the best thing about the quote button - taking things out of context can be a real art Laughing

Same ol' same old. They're all blind and stupid, all of 'em. So common, it's hardly even worth a mention.

You mean this bit?

Meh, guess I could have just said "Dang, I had to brake hard for that one", but adding a bit of colour to the statement, by exaggerating for effect, seemed to make the post feel more lively. Sort of loses it's charm though when you have to explain it Wink

Don't let me stop you being all sanctimonious though, you go right ahead please :p

Sigh, I know I know. Just you don't usually see them smacking into each other with an almighty bang right in front of you (ok, and I was looking for an excuse to post a new post on here Laughing)!

At the end of the day you had to emergency stop to avoid the car in front stopping.

You were too close

It could well be drivers that don't drive much but with it being xmas time they are out more. The sunday drivers who only really use the car for the weekly shop.

Or again with it being xmas time, they might be pissed.

It's normal.

Car drivers often don't see CARS and LORRIES. It's mostly because they're not looking and are driving on autopilot or looking at their phones.

The car in front did not just stop it crashed into a car that pulled out on him. It would of stopped far quicker than if they had simply slammed the brakes on.

No too close would have been if he had hit the car Rolling Eyes

Remember that car in front did far more than a emergency stop..... So the fact the OP avoided it means he was a safe distance Thumbs Up

Poor obs for not expecting them to do something stupid. Razz

It's not just bikes or cars that people pull out in front of without looking.

I usually drive/ride in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambs. Drivers there seem to be a little more aware of what's going on around them. I spent a few days in East Sussex this Christmas where it appears everyone else on the road drives/rides* like a retard. People down there seem to wait right until the last minute, then pull out in front of a car coming towards them, U-turn where ever, just because they can. I particularly enjoy the fucktards in Bexhill who double park where ever they like.

*This is really directed specifically at the retard I watched the other day on the A22 out of Eastbourne. The gap down the centre was big enough for a bus to get through but old Dickie Head obviously thought his SV wouldn't fit so needed to try and bully other road users out of the way with the use of his unbaffled can and rev limiter. I was asked if that was what "filtering" was. My response was "No, that's what being a cunt is".

Tis the season and all that.
Seasonal Affective Disorder
Just plain tired driver disorder
Hungover driver disorder
Still pissed from last night...
Had half a bottle of teacher's for breakfast
Ran out of fucks to give

Or inexperenced rider going too fast, too close, no escape route, no lights on, could see car but driver can't see bike becasue parked cars, road furniture, other obsticles, failed to use horn when appropriate.

Read 'roadcraft', do trainings, leave gap to vehicle in front, slow down approaching junctions, position self in road correctly, be able to stop in the road you can see to be clear, stay calm, ride, stay alive.

Well done on not getting deaded.

I tend to agree with the OP, given that you were able to stop suggests you were following at a reasonable distance, this type of event is what emergency stop is for!

Hope you stuck around to check peoples were okay, give details as a witness if required etc, - even though it appears straightforward, if nothing else the driver may remember to repay the compliment if they ever see a biker get smidsy'd in future.

They didn't. I stuck around in case anybody wanted a statement, and then they called one of the guys to say they were stuck behind some sheep Shocked and it'd take too long so if nobody was badly hurt just to exchange details.

Appears that if there's no one breaking the speed limit, they're not interested.

At which point, I gave them my details in case their insurance wanted a 3rd party account, put my helmet back on and went on my merry way. And that was that basically.
