I have often wondered how on earth people are able to get wheelspin from the rear wheel remaining stationary, without the bike shooting out from underneath them. Could someone enlighten me please?

Front brake, lean forward, gently let clutch out whilst accelerating and the wheel will spin.

Some tips:

Hold the brake tight and DONT let go! Laughing

Lean forward as much as possible

Cover the clutch, if the front wheel slips or you want to stop, then grab the clutch quick!

Stick your back wheel on top of a drain cover, in the rain. It'll spin up easy as anything.

It's called a burnout.

And don't underestimate how far you have to lean forward!

Usually the people doing burn outs do it on an almost worn out tyre becuase if you carry on for to long with the burn out - BOOM! there goes the tyre and you end with a possible scratch marks to the wheel's rim.

Basically, you have to be able to afford to waste tyres and possibly having to replace the back wheel due to it either being buckled or a badly scratched wheel rim if done many times over if the tyre rips completely apart.

If you don't have a good tyre on a spare wheel to swap over to for going home then you'll need a van/trailer to get your bike back home.

Probably better to more "dump" the clutch. Save the clutch a bit. Wink

Hold the front brake tight. Try and keep the bike upright.

Its really really easy. Hold the front brake very tightly, lean right forwards on the bike so youre over the screen as far as you can comfortably go, rev the engine very high and slowly let out the clutch until the rear wheel spins.

Just make sure you keep the revs quite high, and try your best to get the rear wheel to be "light" by leaning forwards and pushing down on the bars.

I managed it easily for the first time having just asked someone on IRC how.

From what I've seen, it usually takes ages to make the tyre go pop, even with a knackered one spinning at 140mph or so.

You think?? Bikes with smaller power would just grip straight away as the wheel wont be spinning fast enough to lose grip. The safest way to do it would be to let the clutch out slowly. Thumbs Up

Eh? Yes I think. In fact I know. I happen to own a bike with a small capacity engine...

He asked for tips, so I gave.

I could rev mine all I like, If I don’t dump the clutch hard enough, the clutch will take all the grunt, and not put enough power through (over a short enough space of time) to the make the wheel lose traction.

The sooner you let the clutch out fully, the less amount of wear to the bike's clutch will be caused. Also the quicker you let the clutch out (with revs) the sooner the wheel will start to spin.

Same principle as wheelieing. You want to dump the clutch (small bikes) to get as much power though over a short amount of time to raise the front. Hopfully the conditions are such that the rear wheel won't lose traction, otherwise you get long rolling burnouts. Laughing Embarassed

If you own a 400, then it will probably do abut 55-60 in 1st gear, that is easily quick enough to spin the wheel.

My bike does 20 in 1st.

6th actually. Tis what we did to Kev's courtesy Hornet Very Happy Lots of smoke, bike overheated, took ages to blow.

Rolling Eyes I know it can wheelspin, my point was that if you want to save some excess wear to your clutch, dump it faster to get the wheel spinning sooner, instead of slipping (easing it out gently) at like 10,000 rpm +...

Mine was also 6th on my ZX9, but it was pretty downgeared.
As it was on cheap tarmac, it actually left quite a significant hole in it!

You can see both on the BCF 203 trailer.
