M.A.S.H. was brilliant, easily the best drama series the USA ever produced. I refuse to call it a sit-com. The depiction of the brutal reality of war was so un-American.

At least the version we got in the UK was. Unbelievably the US version had canned laughter.

We're currently working our way through the box set up to series 5 now. Trapper John has been replaced by BJ Hunnicut, according to Wikipedia because Wayne Rodgers was fed up of playing second fiddle to Alan Alda who got all the funny lines.

BJ is a satisfactory replacement to Trapper John but it is noticeable that his character relies more on his own enigmaticism and has less to say than his predecessor. Alda still gets most of the laughs.

The most remarkable thing about MASH is that it not only stands the test of time, but manages to convey the utter misery and futility of war while still playing for laughs.

It would be very hard for me to pick a clear favourite although Klinger must be near the top of the list, the Blake / Radar double act is up there too

up to about season 7 it was good. Then Alan Alda got behind the camera and it got a bit preachy.

Trapper John and the original Colonel were very good.

That's what makes it so realistic IMO, even in dire situations like a military operating theatre in full swing people still crack jokes and flirt, I suspect it's all part of preserving one's sanity.

I always wondered how did the medics know when they could safely get smashed? Cos often all the docs were drunk at the same time.

I guess, in reality, that there would be more surgeons than those depicted in the TV series, no doubt working some kind of shift rota.
I would also guess that, in a real life situation, there would be some kind of, intelligence led, warning as to the likelyhood of large numbers of casualties.

They would have lined their stomachs with Instant Potato beforehand.

Like top tier sportsballers can get a "bit" rapey?

Never really cared for it - it insists upon itself.
