was the V5 in the blokes name that you bought it off?
anyway you have a few options:
1) wait for V5 to come back then check all numbers. if its fine then its not a problem. if its different then....
2) take the bike back to the seller and tell him what you have. demand your money back and give the bike back. If he refuses or is suddenly untraceable then....
3) take the bike to the police station and tell them what you have. they should check the bike and if its wrong / stolen etc they will tell you. however if its stolen, the bike will be seized from you and give it back to the rightful owner.
You will be able to give a statement saying who you got the bike from etc which should lead to his arrest for handling stolen goods (you may have to chase this as it can be a long process).
4) make a civil claim (google "money claim") against him for your money back. send in the bailiffs. ____________________ Current : '08 Yamaha FZ1s

Ouch. Well, hopefully it's just a records snafu and the VIN will match the V5C. However, MOT places will check it so you do need to get it sorted one way or another.
One possibility is that the frame has been swapped. In essence, the frame (and the VIN) is the bike, so if that turns out to be the case you'll want to tell the DVLA that you're the new keeper of that frame and let them sort it out.
Best of luck. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

id be very surprised if he had any issues.... he will have taken it to the police of his own accord after finding it suspicious. That's the actions of an honest person, not a thief. ____________________ Current : '08 Yamaha FZ1s

Wrong VIN nearly always means you've bought a stolen bike. If you go to the seller you might be lucky and get your money back (but if you wait for the V5c they will have spent it). If you go to the cops you lose the bike and then you have to sue the seller for your money.
I would be beating the guy's door down this morning. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Hahah, no, no, sir, the DVLA don't make mistakes.
Do nothing and don't fret until you have the V5C. It may all be perfectly innocent, by which I mean just a typical typo. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
