Hi, thinking about getting something LEZ-compliant ( Wink ) to run as a 2nd vehicle, and maybe a stealth-camper now and then. 10yr old Transit kind of thing.

Am I going to be able to insure the thing, any tricks I should know given that I won't have any spare no-claims (full NCD on main car, 1yr on bike)?

Transits are $hit. Whenever I've checked quotes on a van (even a corsa panelvan) for personal use the quotes have been massive, I think less competition, no NCD and still being at a rapey age for insurance doesn't help.

Phone suppliers and ask if they'll match your car NCB.

My family car used to be a 12 seater minibus with two seats taken out and replaced with a dog cage. I don't remember any problems with insurance, though it wasn't cheap.

Edit: Memories surfacing; I did have to go with a particular insurance company as my previous one wouldn't insure it, but it wasn't an issue for private use.

If you take your car NCB over to a commercial policy you may not be able to take it back to a car one! Just check before you sign up!!

my van is privately insured.

my car (performance car) is insured through greenlight who specialise in modified or high performance vehicles. I've got my van insured through them as well under their modified vehicle insurance and all that took was me chucking a set of alloys on it Very Happy

(I was talking to them about the car and happened to mention I was looking for decent van insurance presuming they couldn't help and they essentially told me, chuck some alloys or an exhaust or something on it and it'll count as modified so they can put all their discounts onto it for me. Probably the 1st time ever modifying a vehicle has lowered the insurance!)

They also mirrored my NCB from the car to the van which was very handy. Dropped the quotes I was getting from over £800 to £200

In short, yes it's possible.

I insure my combo van privately.
I don't really pay anymore then I'd expect to pay for an equivalent Vauxhall corsa, about £160 with decent no claims.
You get stung a bit on tax, £220 for a 1.3d which would be about £35 if it was a car (not really an issue for a transit as it will be the same price bracket which doesn't seem so bad). Also some tolls, ferry crossings ect charge more just because its a commercial vehicle and you are quite limited on where you can park anything over 6'6, not just city centre a lot of beach, country parks ect have height limits as well.

I don't get this ncb thing. Why can't you use it on more than one policy?

I thought it was just to measure your level of risk. So how does that change if you have more than one policy?

strange, for my age it's always been cheaper to insure a van than a car. it's gone from £1500 when I was 19 to £500 now at 24 for my lwb vivaro.

NCB is used on one policy only .. a policy may have more than one vehicle or driver named...

why .. thats a good question .. Thinking

its not a measure of risk but rather a No Claims Bonus ..

with more than one policy you accure your NCB independently...
but a claim on any policy will increase your level of risk putting your premiums up on all policies.

My caddy was just a few £ more to insure than my fabia when I swapped them. That's insured for personal use only with direct line.
Worth ringing around to see who has the best price tho as I found massive difference between ins Co's

I had a Leyland Sherpa for five years+ as a private vehicle without any bothers from DVLA or insurance companies.
Used it to take my motoball bike to events and as a rough camper for when I used to do a bit of night fishing.
Loved it and as it wasn`t being used as a work-horse/flogged to death, it lasted well.
Only ever got stopped once by the piggies because they saw a number plate in the back, all was well as I had all the documents on me at the time.
My point being : it should`nt be an issue as long as you declare to the insurance company that it is NOT being used for commercial purposes.

I've got a Vauxhall Zafira as my stealth-camper these days.
With a bit of a squeeze, I can lie down to sleep in it Smile and I am 6'4'.

Have you considered an estate car with a tow-bar and a single bike trailer ?

Mine is insured as a van, but apparently a lot of insursers consider the crew-cab Vito (dualiner) a car, which can save some money/hassle.
