I got stopped by the filth this morning, his opening gambit was that I drove appalingly.

Apparently, despite what Rule 191 of the Highway Code states, it is illegal to overtake any vehicle in the zig zag area, and not just any that are a) leading and about to cross the crossing or b) stopped at the crossing to allow pedestrians to pass...

Anyway, I tried to point out that I hadn't done the above but he then started to insist on showing me 'the law'. At this point I backed down as I could see that there were other juicy tidbits to come and I didn't want to embarrass him in public...

Next he complained about the fact I overtook him. Apparently overtaking at 30 mph when he was doing 20 between the lines of traffic wasn't 'filtering' but was in fact the offence that he had just invented of 'overtaking in a built up area'. Try as I might, I can't find this one on the statutes anywhere.

I was then accused of 'overbraking' (I was only using the rear brake due to the wet roads) and 'overaccelerating' (which I clearly wasn't going because he managed to keep up with me for 5 miles).

There were other minor complaints about my riding but I'll not bore you with the crossing hatched areas and sticking my head out to see round vehicles ahead (I wasn't, I was sticking my head ot to look in my mirror to see if he was still right behind me.)

Anyway, the scores on the doors.

1) Half an hour of my life I'll never get back
2) The awe and admiration of all the apprentices because a) after the litany of bad behaviour I didn't get nicked, b) I'm so old-school that I refer to them as 'the filth' c) I was right and the cockwomble was wrong about the law and, finally, d) because I have 'Reverend' as my title on my driving licence.
3) I got to see a coppers face turn puce when he saw Marm's 'Bristolring' stickers.
4) Respect level for the local cuntstabulary is now minimal

Nah, he did ask to see my license, hence the extra kudos from the apprentices because I told him the reason it had Reverend on it was because I got fed up with getting stopped in the 90's

This bit puzzles me the most, Is it not permissable to look to make progress where safe and appropriate?
I don't understand how that is deemed unsafe. (and I rarely filter, but I'm always looking to) Confused

He insisted that it indicated that I was too close behind the vehicle in front.

As I said, in reality I was looking to see if he'd turned on his flashy lights yet.

"Now"? Laughing

Good job on not being nicked after daring to disagree with Cunstable Cockwomble.

In future I would suggest simply sticking to laughing.

Am thinking of carring my 9 year old son's copy of the Highway code in my backpack, on account of the fact that he doesn't need it as he's read it.

Unlike my protagonist today...

He also tried to tell me that 'white lines are slippery when wet' and you should avoid driving over them.

I managed to avoid the response 'Only when you are trying to drive a F1 car on slicks in damp conditions', and just restricted myself to saying that I'm more concerned about the drain covers that seem to be stuck in the middle of every corner.

Slightly off topic, in the mid 80s I was in the car late at night. Stopped at traffic lights near the Blackwell Tunnel and reached across for my Ciggies on the passenger seat, lights changed and I stalled the car as I was concentrating on where my lighter was. No other cars around except one slowly approaching from behind.
No Problem, start the car, drive off, turn north on the A12. The road goes 2 lanes, 3 lanes then 2 again.
Flashing blue lights from the 1 car which turned out to be Old Bill.
Unmarked with 1 uniform Plod and 1 younger female.... I assume police woman in plain clothes. Hand over license and explain to the guy I was getting my lighter etc then the woman asks why I was driving all over the road. "It's called lane discipline" I said, the guy looked embarrassed and the girl looked confused.
And off I went after breathing into the bag. Cool

Do bikesafe next time they come up cheaper than a day's petrol. Be able to answer "who taught you to ride like that?" with a name and number Thumbs Up

Seriously though, there is some stupid going around. I think i have recounted before my stop for avoiding a diesel spill (or pedanticly sticking to 30 in a village whilst being tailgated by unmarked bacon wagon).

This week's stupid involves having a panda car sat behind me going through the bits of south yorkshire that arent rich enough to get proper flood warnings. It's dark and on a back road, i'm going as briskly as i dare given oncoming traffic means no main beam and it's chucking it down. There's a panda car behind me. I'm not particularly bothered as I'm not speeding or riding like a dick. There's a red "road flooded" sign in the ditch as i approach a bridge. I know the road is lower on the other side of the bridge, so i brake gently and drop a few gears. I could have just rolled off and downshifted, but i figured showing a brakelight would be a good idea.

Panda car sounds horn aggressively and moves to overtake, over the blind hump of the bridge, approaching a junction. it's I dab the brakes a bit harder at this point and the panda sails past. Of course over the bridge and across the bend and junction is a decent dose of standing water. Panic braking ensues, followed by a disappointingly small splash. I potter through shallow water whilst a pair of likely PCSOs check thier underwear, only to pull in and wave them by when they reappear behind me halfway through the next village.

I assume the ageessive driving without nlue lights was due to it being about the time the supermarket puts discount stickers on its "bakery" goods. Although how deep fried stuff comes under bakery I don't know.

Contact local top police person and have a moan, for a laugh?

Not that I would if it was my local area, for fear of future persecution.

This is the problem with the attitude of the police as it stands in the UK and other western countries. They believe they are there to lecture and to be above the 'common man'. Sadly, the police consist of nothing but 'common men' (and women) so elevating them above their peers seems strange to me.

The police ought to be more accountable to the public, and also be whiter than white. They should never be 'holier than thou' however, and they should not use their power unless absolutely necessary. The problem that you have is that people who crave this sort of power are often not the sort of people you want to have that sort of power.

Maybe we should psychologically screen all police candidates and only recruit idealists?

I wouldn't mind if they actually knew what they were talking about.

The couple of times over the last 15+ years I've been stopped the cops have always been very polite. Licence check, short chat about this and that and on my way.

Only arrogant prick I've ever dealt with was one I dared as directions to as they'd closed the road ahead. Tried telling me I must be blind and my sunglasses were obviously too dark as I can't read the road closed sign as I pulled up just past it as the border was opposite a junction so I didn't want to stop there and block other traffic. Damn me for being considerate to others.

I ignored the prat and after a sigh just asked my question to which he did reply helpfully and I turned round and was on my way but you shouldn't have to put up with jumped up idiots like this who feel they can talk to you like shit just because they carry a badge.
