its down to the MOT tester to decide at his discretion

Polish the stamp out with some abrasive polish.

But yeah, all down to the tester at the end of the day, although he's more likely to pass it if its not stamped with anything than if its stamped with "for race use only"

Bike manufacturers don't make bikes quiet for fun, legislation forces them to. If you fit a noisy after-market can that doesn't have the appropriate type approval stamp you should be prepared for the MOT inspector to fail it.

Personally I don't see the point, you're just forcing everyone you ride past to think, 'tosser', 'fucking noisy bastard', most of them aren't into bikes in the slightest, believe me they're not thinking 'wow, that's noisy, it sounds great, he must have a huge dick', they're thinking you are a huge dick like the guy with the red Nova that has a 10 inch diameter exhaust pipe coming out of the back and red windscreen wipers.

There are plenty of road legal cans about, but if you just want noise, that's exactly what the type-approval legislation is trying to prevent. Think how many Es you can buy with the money you save.

I'm sorry, I can't believe that unless a noise meter is being used during MOT testing, the noise legislation can't simply be thrown away and leaving it to the testers 'ear' wouldn't be suficiently reliable.

I know for certain that noise regulations are being tightened further for new vehicles (cars as well as bikes), so there's no way you can just fit whatever you want.

Do you have any evidence to support your comment?

IF the can is stamped NOT FOR ROAD USE...fail

STAMPED...FOR RACE USE ONLY..fail

if the bike has no stamp what so ever its a pass
unless the bike is louder than 56DB

and mot testers do not use DB checkers unless there twats

these are the rules that have currently come into affect if in doubt check with the tester if he will do it with this can and let him hear it..dont be scared to ask them..

it all depends on the area you are in if you are in a area where there are houses on each side the can will see louder....but as for performance..there is no benifit on the roads to haveing a race can on..rather than noise

To be honest, I only past my test 3months ago and although I think I'm an okayish rider, I know I have lots of areas to improve on. However, this will come with time but for now, I find a louder than stock exhaust is more adequate after having clipped several very stupid pedestrians.

At first I wanted it for noise, but after having clipped pedestrians, POSSIBLY down to my lack of experience, then I wanted it for making myself more "visible". People can think I'm a dick all they want, so long as I don't knock anyone over or get knocked off myself, I'm happy the way my not for road use can.

Don't go slating us all with the same brush jaffa. I love the sound of my bike but thats not the only reason I have it. Smile

P.S on the thing with MOT's, just ring ahead and see what the tester says. Obviously, polish the stamp out otherwise you're asking for a fail. Worked for me but I went over to him beforehand just to make sure it wasn't too loud for him (comparatively quiet to be honest)

The rules changed last year. The exhaust test for the MOT is now that it must be as quiet as a standard exhaust system in reasonable condition in the opinion of the MOT tester. It could have all the relevant stamps but still fail in the opinion of the tester.

It is a lot more than 56db. That would be under half the noise level of normal conversation (it is a logarithmic scale, and 3db is a doubling of the noise level).

All the best

Generally yes, the gain is tiny over a well designed road legal exhaust.

However not all standard exhausts are well designed. 1200 Bandit standard exhaust is dire.

Also it depends on how the bike is jetted. My Bandit has a full Akrapovic system on it. If the road baffle is in place it has a large flat spot at low revs, especially when cold.

All the best

Keith

listen to keith, spot on. having done mot's till very recent, ( nov last year ) what keith says is the way the law and department of transport instruct the testers. no bs mark no pass simple. putting your own B S mark on wont work either. tested a number last year with a B S kitemark on, like the ones on electrical goods, nice try but nothing to do with motor vehicles. best thing to do if you really have to have a race can keep the standard one and swop over at MOT time. the removable baffle type also fall short, if the tester thinks its to noisey he will fail it so put the baffle back in. Hi

Problem with the Bandit is that it runs a bit lean between 2500 and 5000rpm. They could not manage to get the jetting right in that rev range with the combination of pipe, engine mods and the standard airbox with a K&N filter and the lid chopped off it. Not a problem in warm weather but the cold makes it more critical.

All the best

Keith

Jaffa, don't you think that race cans do help alert drivers to the presence of a motorbike?

When I got my Thundercat it had the standard exhaust which was almost silent. I found that when filtering drivers consistently didn't notice me and as a result they would do silly things like U turns straight into my path.

When I got my race can I started to notice that many drivers would hear me and look in their mirrors and see me.

Then you'll fail the MOT for not having a road legal exhaust because it will fail on the noise pollution laws if it's marked on it "Not for Road use" and they can even suspect if it's been sanded&polished off if they really don't like you, either that you'll get stopped by the Police and get done by them for the same reason noted above !

Thats a risk which the rider has to decide if they want to take by looking at the risks and the benefits. You're not going to get done for your can unless you're really really taking the piss or find a really pissed off cop.

Failing MOT for a race can is quite daft as you do know that its a fail point and going to an MOT with one unless you know they don't mind is a waste of time.

The problem is when you bend the original system and they want many hundreds of pounds for a new one. When you can buy a new aftermarket non road legal system for a fraction of the price, what is the incentive to buy an OE one?

Another point I'd make is that it appears to me that there are hardly any exhaust manufacturers who even make road legal systems except for the OEMs anyway. Confused

The self satifaction of being road legal, Razz and also not pissing your neighbours off.

There are quite a lot of companies who make race cans making road legal cans as well now or cans with remnovable baffles which you can just leave in the can.

Yep, plenty of companies selling road legal cans - akrapovic, venom, devil, yoshimura, micron etc etc.
This is my akra can with removable baffle, actually sounds quite quiet even with the baffle out (though it can set my car alarm off at 30 feet..)

Ok, ok, the only reason I posted was to show off my new can Laughing
