So now it seems that men can only safely drink 14 units per week, the same limit as for women.

The government health bods have gone further and advised that there is no "safe" level of alcohol consumption.

In fact drinking more could increase your risk of cancer by, ooh.......1%

Don't know about anyone else but I'm prepared to take that risk Wasted Wasted Wasted

Seriously though, how can they expect anyone to take public health guidelines seriously when they change so often and are so arbitrary?

In other news Black Pudding is now a SUPERFOOD. It's true. You can't get enough of it Thinking

Oct / Nov / Dec turned into an absolute alcohol induced coma for me. I don't think there was a single day without alcohol and there were some seriously heavy sessions in there.

I'm now on day 11 without a drink (yes, including NYE) and obviously everyone says you'll feel healthier for it, you'll lose weight, your skin will be better, you'll sleep better and I'd have never have believed them without trying it......

So now I've tried it and I can confirm:
Weight - to the ounce the same as before
Skin - spottier
Sleep - harder to get to
Health - still feel as crap as I always did

Now, where did I leave that bottle opener.

To be fair it was in the news as early as September, possibly before that even; it's only the announcement that comes conveniently / sarcastically / ironically timed.

It's probably a good limit for someone drinking every day as a medical guideline. The issue with alcohol and other drugs though is not so much the quantity on a given day, but the regularity of it. This advice is also meant to cover quite a wide range of people, some of whom will be much more sensitive to alcohol. It's fairly obvious that this does not represent the maximum you can possibly drink without suffering damage.

In all fairness lifestyle changes normslly take 6 to 8 weeks just to start seeing any real change...then to see any significant change is around 6 months...most people don't have the willpower to last this long...so proclaim the change a failure without giving it a realistic chance.

So 8 days...whilst I'm impressed...isn't going to show ANY real world differences. Good work so far though keep it up.

I stopped drinking for a bit because I was worried about feeling shite in the mornings.

One morning I was driving in to work thinking "Hope I don't get stopped by the police on the way in. Might still be over the limit.". Then I realised I hadn't had a drink for nearly a month.

Turns out, I'm just crap at mornings.

Bought a breathalyser recently for morning after purposes.

Turns out, I'm just crap at mornings.

Also turns out I'm a walking alcohol metabolising machine. Something that has been confirmed by the readings I got from the coppers on the couple of occasions I've been stopped having had a drink (Blew 0.35 after three pints of cobra). I think this could be hereditary. My grandad could famously blow clear on the old "bag" breathalysers despite having blatantly polished off half a bottle of whisky.

This X 1,000,000. I drink most days whether it be a glass/bottle or two of wine or a few ciders. I decided to try Dry January, but I opened a cider about 10 mins ago because it's what I usually do on a Friday. Sans booze, I didn't feel any better, slept worse.

Coming from a family of drinkers doesn't really help, I was planning on popping to my parents to swap the bikes over and Mum said not to bother if I'm not drinking!

My wise old Mum has always said, "It's a long night if you don't have a drink."

Without a little de-inhibition, you'll live both longer, and less.

I'll be taking as much notice of the new guidelines as I did of the previous ones.
After all, the lyingcunts simply made up the old ones.

Alternatively, you can drink alcohol and eat bacon sandwiches. Mr. Green

Saw about this on the news today and thought what a load of bollocks, yet another thing to add to the list of things that cause cancer.... when will they realise it's air that's to blame, remove that and you remove the chance of cancer completely Rolling Eyes

Its such a relief the same caring and concerned government and their ''health advisors'' aren't busy shaving the remaining slithers of skin off already decomposing alcohol-support services; what with alcohol suddenly being considered as a more significant risk to many people that have been being told its generally 'okay' for a while Whistle.

It's not that you live longer, it just feels like it.

I presume these people know that if everyone stops smoking and drinking the government will tax keeping fit Thumbs Up

You're like a real life Ron Swanson.

As for the thing people are moaning about, I'm not sure why this is such a big story. The advice is there because a link has been found between drinking alcohol frequently and health problems. This is just another bit of advice to ignore, along with eating your 5 a day, avoiding hard drugs, not smoking, avoiding unprotected sex with girls from Watford or doing DIY without eye protection.

There is no change in the law. There is no change in the price, packaging or availability of alcohol. Getting drunk still remains a cheap and easy thing to do - to the extent where if you have a session at home and are a smoker, you could easily spend more on the fags smoked over an 8 session that you spend on the booze.

There is plans (in Scotland to begin with), to charge at least 50p per unit of alcohol

I thought that was decided to be illegal according to EU laws.

I believe they wanted to increase the taxes, which is what the EU classed as illegal, but they are willing to accept a minimum unit charge.

Edit

My mistake, it's the other way round. They can't impose a minimum unit price when they can increase taxes to discourage heavy drinkers

Indeed. But increasing taxes disproportionately hikes the price on the expensive booze which is exactly what jakeys aren't drinking. Euromongs mong it up again.
