Hi, yes you do as a 125cc isn't a moped.

I'd go with probably.

You don't have an A1 license, so the first thing you'll need is a UK license with provisional A entitlement.

Then the question is: does having a Euro AM validate your provisional, to which the answer is... maybe.

Or rather in practice it's whatever the DVLA, your insurer and the rozzers believe it to be. AM is a funny category, it's barely even considered in the regs or .gov descriptions.

I wouldn't bet on it.

DVLA said yes to my German driving license holding Japanese passport holding friend. I'm not 100% sure I trust their judgement.

Post a picture of the back of your licence card, then we'll know.

EU Licences are fine in the UK.
You have provisional Motor Cycle entitlement on a 125, so you need to use L plates.

That would validate any provisional entitlement that you have to ride A1/A2/A class bikes under the appropriate conditions.

It doesn't grant you any entitlement that you don't already have.

Did the training school verify that you have such provisional entitlement? They should have done so.

If they did, how did they do it?

Truth to tell, it probably isn't a big deal. If you can produce your DL196 (the CBT certificate) then it should satisfy any questions.

Where it might matter is if you decide to sit tests to get yourself a proper A1/A2/A license. You will have to talk to DVLA and DVSA about how you do that.

I don't believe there is a British licence (Paper bit is now invalid) any more, it's just the European licence.

I think the final answer is that having done the CBT you can ride a 49cc moped, drive a car and a tractor. Nothing else.

Do you have a UK driving licence number? If so, and you have the relevant provisional entitlement, you can ride up to a learner legal 125 (or larger, whilst in radio contact with a suitably qualified instructor), as you have completed a CBT course.

If not, then any CBT course you may have done is invalid and you can't ride ANY powered two wheeler in the UK whatsoever. Your AM entitlement, according to your licence, started with your car entitlement, which means on the face of it, you didn't pass your test on an AM machine. So, you need to hold, or have held a valid CBT in order to validate your AM entitlement on UK roads.

There is a lot of misinformation here. I would just like to clear up some facts.

EU Licences are exactly the same across the EU, all member states are equal. Some countries allow differing allowances with regards to what you can and cant do with these allowances, but in the UK you are entitled to:

AM Category - Ride a moped upto 50cc After CBT completion.

CBT Cert - Light motorcycle up to 11 kW (and a power-to-weight ratio not more than 0.1 kW per kg) and 125 cc and Display L Plates.

All other information is pointless, as you are asking if you can ride a 125 with AM and a CBT, the answer is yes, as long as you display L plates and renew your CBT when it expires.

There really is no more you need to know.

"Provisional" is not a license category though, is it?

It's a UK invention, attached to UK issued licenses.

Can you find the word "provisional" in here?

The point is that people are confusing a system that has now been brought in line. There are no UK licences, they are all EU licences now.

If he has a full EU car driving licence in the UK, we allow that to be used along with a CBT to allow him to ride a 125cc learner legal motorcycle. Which is all he is asking.

There really is no need to talk about provisional entitlement, as this is a moot point. Provisional entitlement not being on a licence issued in Germany, does not mean it's not valid in the UK, as our laws state that having a full EU driving licence grants you that entitlement.

Well, you've provoked me into finding a source for your assertion, so I guess that's a win.

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/part/III/crossheading/community-licence-holders

The Man wrote:
(5) A Community licence holder—

(a) to whom a counterpart of his Community licence is issued under section 99B of this Act, and

(b) who is authorised by virtue of subsection (1) above to drive in Great Britain motor vehicles of certain classes only,

may drive, in Great Britain, motor vehicles of all other classes subject to the same conditions as if he were authorised by a provisional licence to drive motor vehicles of those other classes.

But as a condition of that, The Man also wrote:
3) The Secretary of State may issue to any Community licence holder who—

(a) is normally resident in Great Britain, and

(b) has delivered his Community licence to the Secretary of State, and provided him with the information specified in, or required under, subsection (4) below, (whether or not in pursuance of this section),

a document (referred to in this Part of this Act in relation to a Community licence as a “counterpart") in such form and containing such information as the Secretary of State may determine but designed for the endorsement of particulars relating to the Community licence.

That's all been revoked, right? Provisional entitlement is purely automatic now?

Your turn.

In the context that I think this doesn't really matter and OP will very likely be fine.

Things have changed and that link is full of old legislation, it say so at the top.

Since June 2015, the counterpart is no longer issued.
Provisonal entitlements are no longer shown on licences, they are automatically granted when meeting the necessary criteria.

I have no provisional entitlement on my photocard, I can only find this information out, when looking online at my personal entitlements.

There is no provisional entitlement for me riding a 125cc bike on my licence or on the site, does this mean I am riding illegally?
No, of course not.

Licences have changed recently, old information is no longer valid.

He can legally ride a 125cc with a CBT and L Plates. There is little point in confusing the matter with websites full of old information.

You can read all about it here.

Obviously (to me at least) this means that some old legislation from 1988 will be outdated and somewhat irrelevant, especially when the legislation is regarding counterparts.

Can you just clarify if you think he and I have no provisional entitlement to ride a 125cc motorcycle, even though we have full car licences and have both passed our CBT? This all seems rather pointless otherwise, as the poor guy is only asking a simple question and it has turned into a rather long winded affair.
