New CB650F

Hey guys,

Just thought I'd pop on and say a hello. Just got myself a CB650F. Previously had a Hornet 600 and VFR400.
Only ridden the 650 once, and so far, mighty impressed. Bit jerky on the throttle, but i find i can adapt to that.

Hi. How does it compare to the Hornet? On paper they're heavier and less powerful, curious if there's a noticeable difference.

The CB650F & CBR650F look pretty similar spec wise, both from Honda's who ate all the pies range Only thing I don't like about them is that they're created to be A2 friendly, when really a Hornet should be putting out close to 100bhp, and a CBR over 100.

I know it's not a massive difference but you want a bike to be as good as it can be, not made to fit into a category.

The 650 is about 85bhp, I'll agree that's pretty weedy compared to a Hornet but it's not A2 friendly. The 500's are.

It's in restricted form.

If the engine power of the motorcycle has been restricted to fit sub-category A2, the normal unrestricted power can’t be more than double its new restricted power.

So that rules out the old Hornets, but the CB650F/CBR650F are ok.

I toyed with a second hand 600RR - 6.5k would have got me a pretty decent one, or an R6, but went for the 650 as it is more liveable with, and it is my first big bike having spent three years on a scooter. I have nothing really to compare it to, but I love it. It might be lacking a bit of punch, but it has plenty of fun factor when you open her up. I'll probably graduate to a litre bike at some point, but for now I've no complaints. Planning to test ride a 600RR in the spring once the weather gets nicer just for a comparison.

87bhp is plenty to have at it with. I don't want to be doing 120mph on the south circular!

Torque x rpm x a constant = power

What you feel as the 'push' of acceleration is related to torque and gearing.

The cbr650f in question makes a claimed 86 horses and 63nm of torque at a fairly lazy 8000rpm. It's going to walk away from a bandit, getting to peak torque in earlier and making more of it, and makes more torque and thus power all the way past an 11000rpm peak

Compare that to a CBR600rr, It's not making peak torque untill 11250rpm and peak power at 13500rpm. Peak torque is similar to the 'f' but so much higher, you'd have to be administering a proper spanking to the machine to get it to shift. I'm not sure such rpm equates to road legal speeds either, so i suspect you'd find more of what the f can do in the course of owning it.

I'd consider riding an f but i doubt the rr would be a sensible commuter.

That said, the jerky fuelling would likely be a dealbreaker for me. The bikes that actually appeal as a daily ride have all been really smooth.

Can aftermatket gubbins like a power commander sort the jerky fuelling?

End of the day, there will always be lovers, and their always will be haters.
I came on here to introduce myself, say hello, not to discuss how good or bad the CB650F is, or is not.

It obviously bothers some on here, but quite frankly, I couldn't give two fcuks to be honest.
Its quite simple really, you buy a certain bike, certain car, if you don't like it, you sell, and buy another brand.

The 650F is obviously a discussion point, so why don't someone stick a post in the general section, headlined discuss the 650F. However, I'd bet its been covered before probably several times!

A lot of it is petty jealousy anyway. It's a great looking new bike with a real world engine, haterz are going to hate.
