Me and a idiot are arguing over something.

Right, he reckons my bike will accelerate quicker if it had a 16" front wheel on rather than the 17" despite them being the same weight.

I reckon it will make no difference.

Let me know your opinions, thanks, Dom.

front wheel will make no difference to acceleration

It will only make a differance if your back wheel changes size. Changing the size of your front wheel will have no effect, whatsoever Thumbs Up

Wait for Kickstart's official and correct answer. But I agree with you. I think that it will only affect your turn in speed, and not you accelleration or top speed. It should just turn quicker.

Does he think its front wheel drive?

The speedo will read faster with a 16" front (by about 6%), so he might have done it before and think it was accelerating more quickly, but he's wrong of course.

I agree with jaffa!

If the front wheel is smaller, your speedo will read faster than real life.

Go get a 22" front wheel and your speedo might Just give you a correct reading Cool

He's Jonny off 125ccsb and aprilia forum (the one that posted a thread about him beating rossi if he was on an rs125 and rossi was on a cbr125)

Keep replying, i need as much evidence as i can get, lol.

He probably thinks if your bike is pointing downwards at the front it will not allow your bike to lift up at the front and allow you to attain maximum speed i.e like what a racing car spoiler does to keep the car basically glued to the ground while travelling at the maximum possible speed what the engine can produce.

If you've ever had a chance sit on a racing bike, like I have, then you would realise that you get a feeling that you're going to flip forward if you braked hard because it gves you a false sensation that you're hanging over the front of the bike, but in reality you are not due to your body position being kept low and of course the front forks are amazingly powerfull too.

Now, if he stuck a turbo-charger on his bike then it would go like a bat out of hell....as some nutter did with a Hayabusa ! Shocked

Ok, If you put a 500kg front wheel on, then yes, It would make acceleration slower. If you put a smaller wheel But nearly same weight as the normal, Then it wont make any noticable difference. It will just cause the speedo to rear incorrectly and will appear to be riding faster.

ANYBODY could beat rossi on a RS125 if he was on a CBR125 (providing its a straight liner Laughing )
On a circuit you would have no chance.
And anyway, What a poof, why not race rossi on a CBR125 aswel!

Is this the johnny that hates everything but rs125's? The guy that I refferred to as a complete and utter nob not so long ago?

If so, that guy cracks me up, I'm sure he's someone's alter ego. The guy just talks so much bull. Honestly, I'd say he's worse than 18aprilia on this board Laughing

Smaller wheels accelerate quicker and that is a fact, however they don't hold speed as well as larger wheels, but in this case as it is only the front i believe it has no affect or it may have only so tiny an affect it's not noticeable.

You forced me. Rolling Eyes A smaller wheel will probably accelerate (and decelerate) more quickly as it should have a lower polar moment of inertia. This can be envisaged as the amount of mass it has at distance from the centre. The 17" front wheel will have more mass further away, so it will need a greater force to turn it, hence (assuming the rear is unchanged) a 16" wheel will accelerate more quickly.

Assuming the rest of the bike is constant, the difference it will make to the effective mass is miniscule. The effective mass is the mass of the entire vehicle including the inertias of the moving and particularly the parts. This mass is used to calculate the vehicle acceleration from the reaction to the force applied to the ground through the rear wheel. Tyre dynamics (the interaction between the tyre and the ground) would have greater effect.

Of course, the difference in the rolling radius of the front wheel will make the front driven speedo read even further too high.

I hate it when these nobends are actually right. Evil or Very Mad Ask him to explain why it (the wheel and perhaps the bike) accelerates more quickly. He won't have a clue.
As an aside, if you popped a wheelie from a standstill and accelerated that way, the size of the front wheel would make no difference as it wouldn't need to be rotated.

Lowering the front does make a difference on a bike that has a decent amount of power. However, you would probably want to raise the front to keep the same handling if you put a 17" wheel on.

Similarly, a heavier front wheel will mean you can accelerate slightly quicker, due to the front being sligtly heavier, which may cancel out the effects from a heavier wheel as far as rotational inertia goes.

However, the effects either way will be pretty small.

I must of asked him about 7 times last night to explain why, each time he just replied about how his old bike (rs50 extrema with the same mods as mine) was quicker due to it being more powerful. So basically he kept changing the subject.

He also reckons his uncles ktm125 exc does a TRUE 120mph Laughing

But he's not thinking about that, and as you say the effect is negligible.

I reckon he's thinking about the effect the diameter of a wheel has on overall gearing (if it were the rear wheel) or he's confused by the speedo inaccuracy if it is the front wheel.

I can't imagine its anything more complex than basic stupidity.

ok let me get a few things straight.

Jonny owned an RS50 Extrema using the slightly more powerful AM5 engine, i have an RS50 Replica that uses the AM6 engine, slightly less powerful but has 6 gears. Jonny ran the same big-bore as me, same carb, same clutch and same exhaust. He's telling me his bike did 0-60 in 10 seconds whilst on the same gearing will hit a 80mph top speed.
I told him that was impossible on this setup, he then goes blabbering on about how the extrema models have a 16" front wheel fitted (standard on all extremas) which will improve the acceleration. When i tell him this is bollocks, all he does is go off topic and start telling me that his AM5 engine was more powerful, and as soon as i say 'yes i know it was, but thats not the point, the point is that you think a 16" front wheel will make you quicker' he then just goes off topic again so never really explains his stupid theory.

So just to get things clear, he hasn't fitted a 16" front wheel to a 17" front wheeled bike. The bike is standard with a 16"

I think all the posts are in agreement, your mate is talking out of his arse. Whatever makes the bike with the 16" wheel quicker (if indeed it is quicker) it isn't the size of the front wheel.

I'm bored of this now, I'm out of this thread.
