You know when you see these documentaries where they hike through remote locations (without film crews) or even just motorcycle vlogs riding through different countries.

How do they logistically manage the footage?

When I go for a ride on a full Go Pro battery charge, it's dead within about an hour an half. Then you've used a good couple gigs in space on the card.

How do you keep everything powered up?

I know you can relatively easily have a box full of high capacity SD cards, which could hold all your footage but I always wonder about the power situation.

Is it just a case of having about 10 batteries and charging them whenever you can?

Solar?

Or they aren't really alone and have one of these with them

I know some have film crews with them but I'm talking about if you were going on your own, literally just you and a bike / hiking, i.e. you don't have a vehicle.

Specifically, I was watching a documentary called Walking The Himalayas and although he had a film crew with him, it got me thinking about if he didn't.

I did watch a similar documentary where they walked through the Amazon and it was just two guys. It obviously took a long time too, like 9 months or something.

For power, if it were a motorbike I'd rig up a battery charger to the electrics. Never done it before but I'm sure it's possible and I'd figure it out.

If it's a journey on foot, then let's face these people you've seen probably had many stops on the way where they could use plug sockets for charging.

Plus they're probably wise and only turn the device on when needed. 1.5 hours continuous GoPro filming could probably become several days or even weeks of careful switch-on-switch-off-ing.

So it's more about conserving shots / battery and only filming little segments, rather than having it running for long periods of time?

Makes sense really, I thought they just filmed shit loads of footage and then chop it all up and edit it down.

Theres lots of portable hard-drive options for the data side of things now too.

I've got the 1TB version of this.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Passport-Wireless-Wi-Fi-Mobile-Storage/dp/B00N4QGL32

2-3 of those wouldn't take up much space or weight at all and that would give you 6TB of storage on the move + however many cards you could also carry and fill with additional data.

When we did our euro trip , I wired up a cheap cigarette lighter outlet with a double USB adapter under my back seat ( zx6r j1 ) I always had a battery on charge for the gopro , had a fair few memory cards but backed it all up at night to a tiny netbook .
I also charged my phone , worked so well I've left it wired up .

I did take a solar charger to the TT once , it was that bad I binned it .
It was recommended on the gadget show but it was pants .
