Google Nexus pads failing big time

Brother has a Nexus 7 pad. Been working great, then it stopped with a poorly Android robot icon and nothing else. (Wont recover, reboot... nada)
Put it down to age, etc. He bought another off EBay It worked fine, then began to do a number of updates.
It bricked!
A quick Google search (oh the irony!) and it seems there are loads of others with this problem. The litigious Yanks are even talking of a class action.
Seems the latest system update just locks everything up. Needless to say, Nexus / Google will do nothing if you are out of warranty.
I've tried rooting it, but the whole dam thing is locked and wont let me in.
Still trying, but DO be WARNED! These things are flaky as hell, great device when working, but not much use if they stop!

My Nexus 10 had an update yesterday/last night. It was working @ bedtime, but haven't checked today. Am I lucky?

Ah great the Mrs has a nexus 7 from years ago and its still doing its thing.....which model do you have?

I have a Nexus 7 2012, the first gen.

Was an decent tablet until the Android 5 (Lollipop) update when it lagged beyond belief - couldn't believe Google released the update knowing the hardware couldn't cope. Custom ROMs were a slight improvement but in the end I downgraded to Android 4.4 to get decent performance.

Should add that its the second gen 2012 2013 5's and 7's that seem most prone, but reports are coming in of later models suffering too.
BTW, send it back and the repair bill is............. £200!
Talk about planned obsolescence, they do i with a software update!

BBTW. Some learned geek reckons its a memory chip that gets too many writes and reaches its flash limit. The 'fix' is to replace the motherboard!!!! Jees. If I had paid full price I'd be bouncing it off a few salesmen's heads.

I have two of the 2013 Nexus 7s and they seem OK despite having that small update a few days ago (is that the one?)
I expect those having issues are watching too much porn.

Mine were refurbs from Argos under £100, I did wonder how come they have so many refurbs though
