A few years ago on ebay, you used to see them pop up quite a lot. I was seriously considering buying one at one point. Now when you look there's pretty much none left.
Did someone steal them all, do they all self distruct?
Is there a warehouse out there with them in it?
Is the same going to happen with the szr660? |

They were all bought by hipsters who chopped off the rear subframes with an angle grinder, threw the airbox and mudguards in the bin, bolted three times their new value of bolt-on crap to them then spent a week posting photos of it on instagram.
They then dumped them at the back of their shed because they couldn't get them to run.
Their electrics did tend to dissolve in the rain too but I blame the hipsters. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Well, I'm hoarding one, (600, actually 608cc), at the moment.
For the record, I ain't no hipster!
I got it 5 or 6 months ago for £1.2k, from a private seller.
It's not been messed around with, other than after market indicators.
If you're tall, over 6ft, then think carefully before buying one, they are small bikes, I'm 5'11", and I find it quite comfy, but if I was any taller it would be quite cramped.
I like it, it's very easy to ride, not as viby as you'd think, has a balancer shaft.
Doesn't really matter what gear you're in, it pulls really well.
Brakes are good, for the performance you get, tyre choice is limited!
Kickstarting it is easy, from dead cold it'll start on the 2nd or 3rd kick.
No FI, no electric foot, no electronic wizzardry, so less to go wrong than a modern bike!!
What am I going to do with it?
Keep it!
It's smoking a bit so I'll get around to doing a top end rebuild some time.
It needs one new disc on the front, the current one is warped slightly.
Once the engine's out I may refurb the frame and give the rest of it a new coat of paint.
Other than that it just needs the usual consumables looking at.
If you're after a sporty type bike, it's not for you, it's a nice bike for a lazy, sunny, afternoon blast!
My take on it is, it was Yamaha's homage to old British thumpers, only more refined and less oil leakage!
Edit:
Spares are not, exactly, piled high in warehouses waiting to be rehoused! ____________________ "Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money!" |

I had no idea these were commanding such ridiculous money now. A couple of years ago a bloke down the street had one in his shed, needed minor electrical work (whatever that was) and the brakes were all seized on, but I believe it ran. He was supposedly doing it up but I've never seen/heard anything of it. I wonder if he still has it, sick of the sight..?

There's an article, as well as the usual stuff, about the SZR660, here:-
https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/yamaha/yamaha_szr660%2095.htm
Compares the Bimota version and the standard Yamaha.
The test pilots were not impressed by the Bimota, dunno when it was written. ____________________ "Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money!" |

I have 2 of them, strange fickle things that are barely any quicker than the old LC, I never paid big money for them though, certainly not worth more than 1 k for a good one no matter how rare (poor selling) they were. Pretty though. |

I like the R1-Z but fuck paying 3k for one
The SDR is too small for most western frames, and most of them have TZR125 engines fitted as 200 spares are rarer than Bodyguard's sex life. Pretty though. ____________________ Be a REAL MAN! |
