New boots and issues changing gears

I've only been riding for a couple of months, and whilst I've spent a considerable amount on clothing, I've left the boots until last as I have a pair of work boots which seem up to the job, though they were only ever intended as a temporary measure for riding. They're Hi-Tec Magnums, so sturdy, but not CE rated for riding.

My current work boots are Altbergs, and I've had them for around five years. I've been impressed with them so I bought some Roadrunners for riding. They appear to be very well made, and I went to ride to work yesterday, but ran in to a problem - I can't get the toe under the gear lever in order to shift up. I ride a YBR, so I'm not sure if the issue is with the bike, or the boots. Are gear levers adjustable for this sort of thing? Am I likely to encounter the same issue with any other purpose-made, stiff-soled boot?

Is this a common issue or am I being a bit of a numpty? I went out to the garage this afternoon with the boot in hand - the angles seem unworkable as it stands.

I think your gear lever is just a simple splined type.

There will probably be a punched dot in the end of the shaft it sits on. Make a mark with a pen on the lever next to the dot (in case you want to put it back later). Undo and remove the pinch bolt, slide the lever off and put it back a little higher. Refit the pinch bolt and retighten. Try and see if it is a better fit.

You have picked a very chunky boot there though, also has a fat Vibram sole. Thinner boots with smooth soles allow you to slide your foot in under the gear lever. Ridged soles need to be lifted off the peg a bit and coupled with a thick boot can cause problems.

Hopefully moving the gear lever up will help

Altberg motorcycle boots are no better, the deep toe box means you'll need to shift the gear lever. Easily done. Feels proper weird riding in slim sporty boots on a bike set up for big boots though, my hein gericke boots make me feel like im several sizes too small for the bike as the shifting steatergy becomes swing entire leg at gear lever
