what are the rules when police are chasing motorbikes?

i only ask as it got me thinking yesterday, im sat at a set of traffic lights which splits, one way goes straight and my way goes right.

i hear a few bikes coming up behind me very loud, im guessing 1000cc with the baffles removed, 4 guys pull up, 3 with no plates, 1 with a plate but bent in at an angle, i spotted r1, gsxr and not too sure on the other two, any way they passed a police car in the queue but it did not do anything, they wait on the green then zoom off at around 50+ in a 30 to the next set of reds, police car from a side road turns on sirens and comes around, they spot him so ride through the red lights and continue on and the car follows.

just wondering what are the rules to police chasing bikes in a car or on a motorbike? is there a point they call it off or what happens and seems to be this would be pretty easy thing to do in london as a police car isnt really going to get near you as you filter away?

How far they'll push a persuit is a function of how bothered they can be, wether their wife is on the blob, how long it is to the end of their shift and how close it is to the chippy closing time. Multiplied by the size of their tache and divided by the length of their willy.

In real life, if your riding was sufficiently dangerous, they could justify anything up to and including deliberately ramming you off the road. Helmet or no.

from what ive seen and heard in the UK the police will abandon the chase and may get the helicopter out instead.

however in america they will kill you either by if they catch up to you by knocking you off the bike by ramming you or just simply shoot you.

in south america they will just shoot you and ask questions later

The police previously had a policy of “Don't chase motorcycles” following a spate of low-lives killing themselves while attempting to escape (which, of course, in these hug-a-hoody days suddenly became all the fault of those nasty police officers).

This idiotic stance, presumably dreamt up by some shiny arsed senior officer, predictably resulted in no-one stopping for the police because: “Well, they can't chase bikes, can they?”. Which ironically resulted in even more knob-ends endangering themselves than before.

So now that policy's been relaxed and the police can chase, and even TPAC, bikes again.

These days the officer will “Take a view” on what he considers that you may have done. If he suspects a minor traffic violation, he probably won't pursue you. OTOH, if he suspects that you've just robbed a bank he may well decide to mow you down like a sumbitch.

Both are allowed.

So I guess the question for anyone considering running is: Do you feel lucky? Well do ya?

My highly expert opinion (based on watching road wars a few years back) Indicates that once the helmet comes off, they didn't pursue the bloke. Laughing

There most definitely are guidelines and they get mentioned quite a bit in the press and on those programmes about police chases. According to the press there is a rule that no police can chase a PTW (powered two wheeler) without air support. In London two kids on scooters died in chases about 12-18 months ago - this is why the press wrote about the rule recently. I asked some beat bobbies about that and they said the rule is not that simple. They also said it's not a new rule, it's been in place for years but Met officers were not always sticking to it. Since the two deaths there's been a bit of a stink so the rule is now enforced more strictly.

Off the top of my head I *think*, but don't know, that this is the situation: police drivers are categorised according to what level of training they've done. There's a basic level for any officer driving a Police vehicle, even a van, and there are two 'pursuit' levels, a standard one and an advanced one. Traffic officers all do the standard pursuit training, but not all do the advanced course.

Every time an officer wants to do a chase he has to radio for permission from a senior officer. Whether he gets permission depends on the senior officer's perception of the risk, the training of the driver and the seriousness of the crime suspected. What this seems to mean in practice is that no officers are allowed to chase a PTW for something trivial, e.g. small numberplate, unless they have help from a helicopter. (Which they probably won't get, because the helicopters are always busy doing more important things.) But if the rider is suspected of robbery/violence, an advanced driver will be allowed to pursue, perhaps without air support, unless the suspect starts endangering lives by doing 60 in a 30 or something, or by throwing away his helmet. (This is quite common.) Then the chase is called off.

There's been a rash of serious scooter-enabled crime over the last few years - jewellers' windows being done in by teenagers with sledgehammers - all the smart shops in Bond St now have a heavy on the pavement. A few years back, none of them did. There's also been lots of bag and phone snatching by scooterist yoofs on ordinary roads. It's a big problem for Plod - how do you catch these kids without killing them, when they're doing 60 along Piccadilly with no helmet and there's no helicopter in the area. I suspect that Plod is just not chasing these kids, even with advanced drivers, unless they have air support. But Plod doesn't want to admit this. AFAICS these kids aren't caught unless they crash or someone tackles them at the scene or some stolen goods get recovered and traced back to them. Sometimes they get away with half a million quid's worth of watches in one raid. And stolen luxury goods get a VERY good price when sold abroad.

Eta: there's this https://www.app.college.police.uk/app-content/road-policing-2/police-pursuits/#national-decision-model Clearly it's TLDR. £5 for anyone who gets to the end.

No chase policy here, if you run the cops must turn around and turn lights off. Not had the balls to try it mind

Hiding in a group of 200, what a bunch of fairies. Every time I've been chased I was on my own. Seven times, never caught.

if they have access to a helicopter and having a quiet night they will just call the choppa

otherwise they will chase you in the hope you stop...

if you dont stop then they will patrol the surrounding area all night looking for your parked up bike unless they get a better call.

no helmet will be choppa or not bother.. unless cunts.

i did once race off a set of lights on my 125 with a friend next to me on his.. we got about 200 meters down the road as a police car came flying past lights and sirens, pulled across the front of us and slammed his brakes on.

Friend almost ploughed into his car i almost ploughed into friend.

The policy entirely depends on the local Force.

The reality is as stinkwheel said.

Given the standard of driving of the coppers that I know, I'd expect them to stack the panda in short order, quite possibly into me. Would not risk it.

I would have thought that in most cases they could get DNA from a Bash Hat.....
Obviously they don't have everyones DNA on record at the moment (that they can admit to anyway) but if they can get your DNA at a later date then they'd probably get done for this...

Bollocks. You must be the fifth person to claim that the cops are ramming bikers. They might give you a nudge when you're at walking pace, but when have they ever done it at speed? They lose their jobs if they do.

Silly you, wasting the taxpayers money on such party tricks. Very Happy

In CZE, for instance, they just record what you do during the chase on camera and if they've got enough material and/or if you get away, they will then go and wait where you live (they can tell the owner by looking the the reg. plate in their computer, obviously). OR, they stop chasing you and give a notice to a police patrol ahead to try to pull you over. Many people do, thinking the ''new'' 5-0 unit can't know what I just did 5 minutes ago, which is odd.

The waiting in front of your house thing: if they see you on your motorcycle there: Busted. If they won't catch you there, they will send you a summons to explain where was your motorcycle at the time of committing the act.
1) You may say, that it was you = fine/ban + some points.

2) OR you may say, it was your ''close person'' (legal term) that took the motorcycle with out your permission = fine, no ban, no points.

3) OR you may say, it was your close person, with no further stuff, as above = fine + prosecution for that you do not know who's driving your vehicle and you did not reported it as stolen. The owner must know who is driving his vehicle, if it's not reported as stolen.

BEFORE 2012: you said that a ''close person'' drove the vehicle and that was it. No fine, no ban, no points. BUT the gov. got pissed because there was no one to pay the fines, so they changed the law.

Today, they do not quite care that you are a careless driver/rider. What matters is, that they get paid for your misbehaviour.

Oh, and giving false testimony is a criminal offence punishable by the law, can get up to 1 year of imprisonment. So, make sure you say the story right enough. Thumbs Up
