I'm thinking about bolting an unobtrustive anchor into the side of the kerb front of my house, then chaining a traffic cone o' crete to it to keep my parking spot. Then obviously I can lock my bike up too.

Has anyone had the balls to do this without seeking permission?

The council put them in for free all along the roadside. A multi-purpose device put to intermittent use as street illumination and in a pinch even acting as a dog's toilet or somewhere handy for drunks to cling to whilst they puke their guts up.

The problem is that down my street the chain would have to span the footpath, which would present a trip hazard and an obstruction for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

It might only be 4 bolts, but if some daft twat trips over it and breaks a leg the council will want to know who fitted it. Or if you split the curb stone doing it...

A kerb stone doesn't seem the most permanent thing to attach a ground anchor too. Confused

Another small point of law, it's not your parking spot. You have no rights whatsoever when it comes to parking outside your own home. By making part of the highway inaccessible by any means, even just a plain old fashioned traffic cone or cardboard box you commit an offence.

A small, flush fitted one, installed at the side of a kerb, hardly represents a massive H&S risk. If some tit DID manage to find a way to hurt himself by its presence, and it was traced back to me, I'd say some bloke fitted it for me and told me it was all legal.

It's still better than what it's anchored to at the moment (i.e. nothing.)

I understand that what I'm planning to do is illegal, criminal, evil, and sadisitic. But I wonder if there has been a single case in which someone has installed a ground anchor onto public property and been prosecuted for it?

I understand this. However, the only reason I cannot take my bike down the side passage and store it in the garden is that idiots keep parking their cars in front of the dropped kerb in front of my gate. (I live in a terraced property where the front door opens out onto the street.)

It's not just the council or people tripping on it you have to think about.

How many times have you seen car drivers rub the wheels against the kerb while parking?

You say "A small, flush fitted one".
Anything that small and flush fitted into a kerb will be pointless anyway.

At least we know which council to inform about a dangerous chunk of metal attached to a public highway.

I know that it's illegal and highly dangerous, and that the Russian Mafia may put a price on my head if my diabolical contraption scuffs up their Mercedes. What can I say, I'm a wicked person.

Because I wanted to know if anyone else had done it, and if so, had there been any complaints about it.
