I've made up cables before now I'm looking to run Cat 6 from the living room where the router is to my office.

If this where my house I'm going from bottom right to top left.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f8/Ellen_H._Swallow_Richards_House_Boston_MA_01.jpg

I'm going to run it externally for ease.

A couple of questions. CAT6 or CAT6A? Do I need special cable for it to run outside? Anything else worth considering?

Also a have a load of random RJ45 connector I bought ages ago, can these be used with CAT6a with no issues?

Any RJ45 will be fine.

Are you putting the cable in anything, or just running it as is. I've used standard 5e outside and not had an issue, but if I was doing it again I'd get a thin flexible-ish external pipe along the floor to prevent rodent damage.

I don't think either CAT5 or 6 cable are UV proof (not in the spec), and thus I think Paddy is right. Put it in trunking or it'll go crunchy in the sun.

I have a 1gbps powerline kit, I want something better, it is minimal effort to wire it in and will give better reliable speeds, I only get 60mbps of my 100mbps connection via powerline, I get better than that wireless on my phone.

Fair enough.

As others have said, get some trunking sorted and try to use Cat6 as it is better shielded from RF interference.

Powerline adaptors are shit. I constantly have to unplug them, wait 10 minutes and plug them back in. Hard wiring is the way to go if you can.

If you're running it internally and are going to chase the walls make sure you use conduit in the wall. Feed some string through the conduit too - it'll allow you to pull more cable at a later date if you need it (inevitably you will).

You also can get relatively cheap (54p/metre) cat5 which is UV stable. Have a look for ToughCable Pro (don't use ToughCable Carrier - it's a bugger to work with) if you are running it outside. Another trick to hide it is to put in fake piping (like drain pipes) and feed through that. Depends on the property style really. The Toughcable stuff is black and most people would think it's just a tv aerial cable.

Depends on the adapters you use and the quality of your internal wiring.

They don't work across phases.

Mine have been reasonable good but no where near as good as claimed.

I'd rather not use trunking as it will stand out, can you just a heat shrink like coating that will protect it? I don't think I'll have to worry about rodden dame as it'll be 18" of the ground at it's lowest.

Seems like I can get outdoor sheilded CAT6 but not CAT6A, looks like I'm gonna go for CAT6

Well you could heat shrink it, but that's got to be more effort. You're still buying cable, then covering it and then terminating it. Toughcable can be bought per metre and you'll only need to terminate the connections. What price are you getting on your standard cable?

It's only Cat5e though, I want future proofing if I'm hardwiring it.

Do you have a drain pipe that its going to go up near? If so you can but very thin black plastic tubing, sink it into the ground and run the cable along it, then up.

I don't tend to do things properly but if I was doing do, thats what I'd do, with sealant at both ends to prevent any ingress of water, with tube bends, again all sealed.

We used to run fibre through drains with similar methods however with metal lined plastic tubing rather than just plastic.

Or stop being lazy and route it internally.

Especially if you have plasterboard walls.

Just thinking out loud here, but will you be going through the wall at one location, then tacking cable to the walls around the outside of the house, then going in through the wall at the other location? I wonder if it'll help you to go straight up, take the cable across the house inside the roofspace, then drop straight down, maybe using a guttering downpipe or soil pipe for disguise?

I only say this as I dislike cables tacked around the outside of my house and look for every option to minimise/eliminate/hide it. Right now our house has a little bit across the front where the phone line comes in, but that's it. Satellite and aerial cables go straight into the wall/roof at their mounting points and all ethernet is internally run.

Also wondering out loud, does externally-run ethernet cable represent a theoretical data security risk? Could the cable be intercepted and, I dunno, voodoo hacking stuff done?

CAT6 came out in 2009, what spec are you hoping to future-proof for? Domestic gear still tops out at Gigabit Ethernet, and a domestic installation shouldn't have any long runs or hostile RF environments, 5e will be fine.

Future proof it by using cable ducting. Razz

As you're doing loof insulation stuff, that's a good time for doing the wiring internally. Thumbs Up

Make sure you use the right cat standard, look at an existing cable to see if it says if it is T568A or T568B.

You can use either of them but the rest of the cables have to be the same.

IE if you have cables running the A standard all new cables must also be on the A standard, you can't mix and match as the wire/pin layout is different.
