cheap cars that (can be made to?) sound good?

There are a couple of very cheap V6 lumps - vauxhall do one, and there's a mondeo. Not sure if they'll stand any sort of viable modifying to make them sound interesting though. Are there any cars within the grasp of mortals that make a noise like they've actually got an engine under the bonnet rather than a dehumidifier?

In the olden days when I were young man, young man, you could identify the make and model of a lot of cars from quarter of a mile away on a dark, foggy night. Now sure, that's not to say any of them sounded any good. But at least they were distinctive. Of course, the odd V8 lump in rovers, triumphs and jags used to cheer us up a bit.

Anyway the point is just that I can't think of any cars that have even a distinctive note nowadays - excluding the subaru and mitsy blokes, i.e.

Ideal would be a cheap shit car that (can be made to?) sound good, and isn't overly thirsty. Do they exist?

Was put in loads of stuff, so should be easy to find a cheap one.

The best sound this type of car can make is a quiet sound, stop drilling the exhausts and frightening the old dears - even they probably turn round and tut at the pathetic duff-duff'ers with their microscopic willies...

Real car engine noises come from real cars, I'll never forget the day a Lamborghini came through my town and seriously put his foot down on the straights. Not only was it ear splitting, you could also feel the vibrations through the ground - amazing stuff.
Or get yourself to Santa Pod and get filled to the brim on loud exhausts and jet engines!

The other option is those bicycle handle revving things from Halfords - bung one on your nob and give it a twist whenever you feel the need to feel big.

Any BMW 6-pot. My old BMW 130i would set off car alarms when it was started in an enclosed space (underground garage for example), and that was with a stock exhaust.

Also, depending on how you define "sounds good", a Honda VTEC engine (proper VTEC, none of this diluted i-VTEC malarky) can sound good at 8,000 rpm.

3-pot engines can sound OK, if done well.

An exhaust 'upgrade' on those sorts of vehicle will usually wreck either performance/mpg or both without further tuning/remapping anyway.

Decent ones can be had for a grand nowadays, my old one only had a cone air filter an standard exhaust but still sounded awesome
Even a high mileage one will still be reliable, might be tricky trying to find a manual one nowadays though.

Yes, they actually have fake engine noise in BMWs.

Does kinda make sense, as normally it's the driver that appreciates it the most, while a good proportion of people in the street just get annoyed by noisy cars .
