Buying a bike long distance - V5 sign and Road Tax?

Hi all

ive seen a bike that maybe interested in and its 200 miles away (bike is on a owner's forum)

I am getting quotes from courier companies but what happens with the V5 and road tax now?

do i have to be there in person to sign the V5 and what point do I need to buy the road tax?

DVLA have never given a damn about the signatures on the V5C. I've scrawled any old squiggle on there in the past.

Change of keeper can (finally!) be done online, so even the pretence has been dropped. No need for you to sign anything, and it doesn't really matter whether you or the current keeper does the change. He's responsible for doing it.

VED needs to be bought before it can be used or kept on the road. You can do that online. It used to be necessary to insure first, but that's now chased up separately.

What you will need is the 12 digit number from the V5C/2 'new keeper slip'. You don't strictly need the piece of paper, but I'd rather have it than not.

last question, as im looking to get the bike collected by courier, I assume i insure and tax is the day i make the payment? but collection will be a few days after

Don't insure till it gets there. Its harder to cancel than it is to take it out.

I'd seriously consider going to view it directly however.
