HOW secure is your bike?

Do you think the level of security on your bike when it's not being used is enough to stop it being stolen?

I read all kinds of stuff, people having their bike nicked from outside their windows, people walking in to houses and taking keys and strolling off with the bike to full on seemingly pro jobs where they remove every security device you have and still take it.

What level of security would you LIKE to have if you don't already?

I think mine is quite secure, brick garage with electric steel doors, ground anchors inside with chains, alarmed and cars parked against the doors at night.

In my mind, it'd take some skill to get in there and remove a bike without alerting me. Also have dogs which can detect people within 30ft of the house, even at night, they go mental.

Think the only thing left is to get CCTV installed, which I was going to do some time ago but haven't got round to it.

I like to think mine is secure

It's in a garage in a block hidden from the road

So if someone didn'tknow what was in it they would pprobably break into one of the less secure ones

Next doors door hardly shuts and three have tiny padlocks

I leave my keys in my bike sometimes, in an unlocked shed. Have left keys in bike for up to a month at a time unlocked and no ones touched it (because they all know I'd behead them, not because it doesn't work or anything



At the most I put a D lock on the bike and take the keys.

If out and on a different bike then I'll put a disc alarm on, lock the helmet to the seat (if dry) and put a chain on which I'll try and chain to an immovable object.

My bike is as safe as it can be from opportunists.
It is unlikely to be safe at all from professionals, but any Pro thief who steals a '99 CB500 is a serious moron.
I sleep soundly with my bike where it is.

My garage, right outside my house on a very quiet estate that has no through traffic, surrounded by old people who are curtain twitching if anyone sneezes outside after dark.

My Bmw is chained to my James and my 125 scooter sits next to them with the keys in it, why?

My thinking is simple, if a pro thief wants my bm or James they'll get it, if some chavvy kids get in they'll see the keys in the scooter and rush off with that first, especially as there are about 8 houses (flats) that look directly into my garage, and the curtains twitch every time i come home late or go out early, thats how i look at it.

I don't need to get my bikes out in a hurry as I don't use them daily so if it takes me 10 minutes to de-alarm, unlock and unchain and squeeze them through a tiny garden gate it's no big deal. A concrete shed with a steel door and all manner of alarms and security lights plus more internal security if they get past all that. If it takes me 10 minutes to get them out with all the keys, it's going to take the best of thieves at least as long. 10 minutes of trillion decibel, multiple alarms wakening the dead and making ears bleed does get a lot of attention! Never leave my bike outside at night. When on holiday, before I make a booking for accommodation I look hard into whether they can supply secure parking.

Had off road bikes for years and they are so easy to nick that I had to spend a lot on security. Still maintain the same hyper paranoid approach with road bikes.

Bike is Datataged, alarmed, in a garage that is alarmed to the house alarm. Bike has disc lock on the front (alarmed). The rear wheel is attached to a ground anchor using a Squire SS65 lock and Almax Chain.

Is it possible the bike will get nicked, absolutely, but hopefully the bike is low enough value and the hassle high enough for it to be unlikely.

But just in case, I recently bought a GPS thingy as there may be a 24-48hr window which it could be recovered potentially.
But again, not counting on it.

When out, I just rely on a disc lock to deter the chancers on peds.

I come to the conclusion that your best bets security wise are, in order:

1) Live in a decent area
2) Don't own a bike that's attractive to thieves (ie no scooters, lightweight dirt/trail bikes or sports-bikes)
3) Lock the bike in a garage when it's not in use

When out and about:

4) Don't park in the same place every day
5) Chain the bike to a solid object

Alarms are pointless unless you're at home because no-one else will take any notice.

Chains, ground anchors etc. are pointless at home because any thief prepared to break into your garage is probably well enough clued (and tooled) up to deal with them.

FWIW, I've used 1,2 & 3 quite successfully for the last 30 years.

I always liked the idea of a bird scare device in the garage, attached to the door loaded with rock salt... explain that to the hospital, if it's not dissolved before you get there

or, and I nearly did this...

A garage alarm wired to a disco smoke machine, dual 120db sirens out of time with each other and a strobe... crap loads of noise, can't see and lots of sharp things hanging from the walls to bump into.

Unfortunately, as I was advised by my copper mate - this countries shitty crappy laws, you can't hurt thieving c*nts, or allow them to hurt themselves or risk prison / sued to death whilst they get a slap on the wrist and told their a very naughty boy!

CCTV camera's are so cheap now - around £40 for a WiFi one, they do some pretty neat stuff like motion detection, pan & tilt, email alerting, IR illumination, etc. Really worth having just in case you get a shot of the bastards face! £40 why not??

Mines had a few attempts at being relieved from my ownership over the years (always hard to tell how much effort they really went to though).

In a brick garage I consider it reasonably secure with a good garage defender as its survived so far. I rarely bother even using the Almax chain and ground anchor in the garage anymore as I figure if they've gone to the effort of getting in through the garage defender and door, I imagine they'll almost certainly go to the effort of taking a couple of extra minutes with power tools to get an almax off too, so I don't see the point chaining it anymore really.

Same with the alarm - I usually only bother to use it when i'm parking somewhere else now days.

Nobody knows my bike is there. It's in a locked garage at the bottom of a cul de sac, an integrated garage at that, which I would have thought would have less chance of a break in.

Brakes aren't bled anyway so I'd just have to look for the pile of broken person at the bottom of the road.
