Just heard this on the radio:-

The word "Curry" derives from the word "Sauce".
So, when you ask for curry sauce at the local chip shop, you're actually asking for "Sauce Sauce".

Think of all the tenths of a second a person could save by not saying that second "sauce". Could be worth nearly an extra half a minute on your deathbed, I reckon.

Fucking linguists have conned us.

I get better results speaking to the chip shop lady in a language she understands.

Another Indian word that migrated to English is 'pukka', which originally meant something was good, ready, ripe, sufficient, superior, etc.

Also, 'balti' means 'cooked in a particular type of pan', so your chicken balti could have pretty much whatever it wants in it and it would still be a balti.

I though 'curry' came from the name of a round bottomed cooking pot, the British though the natives were referring to the meal they were cooking when in fact they meant the cooking pot.

Bit like when the Aussies asked the natives what the weird bouncy animal was called and they said 'Kangaroo' which actually meant something like 'no idea mate' in Abo. Or is that an urban myth?
