Hi guys and girls,

29 (soon to be 30 Shocked) and I've recently passed my mod 2. I'm over the moon!

Been looking at all the gear etc and it's getting me a little excited to get out there.

I have my eye on a R6 and I'm really keen to start and continue on sport bikes. Looking to spend 3-4k.

I'm really asking if you guys have any advice for me as the real learning begins now! Also any advice on an R6 as a 'first' bike?

Why?

I would suggest that you try a range of bikes if at all possible. Sports, an IL4 but more upright like a Hornet or FZ6/8, and twins like the ER6f or SV650S.

Try and honestly appraise how much you enjoy riding them while you're on them (rather than standing beside them looking at them), and whether you really like the position and power delivery.

I'm not saying don't get an R6, just consider why you want one presumably without having ridden one yet.

Oh, get representative insurance quotes too.

Has it been a while?

I know a young lady who rides an R6, she does just fine.
Although it's quite entertaining watching her try to do a u turn. Thumbs Up

Agreed, but there are a few examples out there in her price range if she wants to go for the sexy round lights.

Upon checking for confirmation... Yep! Definitely a bloke!

I'm sure insurance will be a drawback but something I'll be looking at prior to getting a bike. There's also a nice zx6r down the road too! Razz

I'll take the recommendations into consideration! Need to get all my gear first! Everything seems to be on sale now so that shouldn't be a problem!

It's a bit tricky testing bikes when the ink is still wet on your license, and you don't have an insurance policy covering riding other bikes.

However, I would urge you to try and have a go on at least one sportsbike (even if it's not one that you're pondering buying) to see if you get on with the position. I found it unnatural, uncomfortable and precarious, but then I've never been into racing so I had no notion of that being how one should sit on a bike. If you've been dripping at the gash tenting your trousers for years over lap times then you may find it matches your expectations.

Buying used / nearly new / unworn from eBay or Gumtree can scoop you some decent bargains for a first set of gear.

Oh, be aware that come the first bout of spring weather there will be a sudden glut of private-sale sportsbikes on eBay and Gumtree. They won't necessarily even be more expensive than the limited selection available for sale right now.

So possibly wait until spring and have a look? That's when I was planning on starting anyway. Just spend now until then gathering the gear!

Well, don't turn down a bargain, but then again, don't jump at the first bike that comes up locally - there will be a better, cheaper one along sooner or later.

Aren't all chaps arseless (by definition)? Or is that the joke? Confused
