Nexus 7 2012, Android, £40 used ish

Linx 7, Windows 8, £50 though I got one for £40 in black Friday!

Linx 7 has better specs but in practice they are pretty much the same. It comes down to which OS you want. Avoid Samsung Galaxy tablets as they tend to be quite pricey. Both last ages.

I nearly bought a linx in the black Friday deals, but they aren't a name I know and are windows. I need it by the last week if Feb, but sooner is better....

OS has to be android. That's a definite.

And I have realised that sim card support is rather important too..

I got a Linx 8 back in Nov 2014 and it's been good as gold. I took it travelling with me to straya and had no problems with it. Hook it up with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard and plug it into a screen and you have a portable PC (well almost).

Only niggle with it is that the sound output on the headphone socket is a big aenemic. It is rather weak and will struggle to drive external speakers to any great volume.

A 10" tablet would make a very good portable computer, but the thing with a 7" tablet is you can just about get them in your back pocket which raises it to a whole different level of portability imo.

Tablets are easier to secure as they are smaller was the justification I was given. Also I guess laptop keyboards tend to harbour all sorts of grot which might not be so good in a hospital

Sounds like they need a proper network admin.

I also +1 the linx brigade. I've got the Linx 10 and absolutely love it, use it alot more than my desk top. Although its more like £80/£90, i run mine with the clip in keyboard.

Linx gets a good name for itself in the hotdealsuk sites aswell..

Also, tesco has dropped selling the Hudl and introduced the Connect 10, which is just a re-badged linx 10

I'd go for a 9/10" tablet over a 7" any day. I bought a cheap one for Christmas when tablets started becoming popular (software 2012), was great for playing NFS most wanted (compared with my 5.5" phone now) and I've used it for many many hours watching films and youtube. I only paid ~£40 at the time. The battery still lasts a long time (7 days standby) but takes forever for youtube to load. I don't use it for anything else mildly demanding.

10" is good for watching videos inside. I use mine for reading mostly, and outside only, so that means I would have to carry a 10" tablet, rather than putting the 7" tablet in my pocket. This halves the number of free hands I have.

I have a 7" Galaxy tab and a full size IPad air that work gave me for a refit.

The 7" goes everywhere with me because, as said previously, it fits in a pocket.

The big I pad sits by my chair at home and only gets used when I can't be arsed to walk to the desk computer.

7" is good. Thumbs Up

asda have some 7" Lenovo's at the minute for about £69 that aren't too bad nice screen and 1gb ram.

the hudl 2 would be a great second hand bargain (recently picked one up for £5 and had to fit a screen for £35) they are easily as good as the nexus 7 2013 I have if not better due to the bigger 8.3" screen,

Both are 1920x1200 with excellent viewing angles, quad cores (1.5 qualcomm for nexus 1.86 atom for hudl 2) with 2gb ram, the hudl 2 has an sd card slot too and better speakers.

The nexus and hudl are both out of production so new stocks will start running out soon.

Lidl/aldi had a medion branded tablet a few months back with similar specs to the hudle but a bigger 32gb internal storage, they where sub £100 iirc.

don't be tempted by cheap ebay Chinese crap they invariably have poor screens and slow cpu's, some are poorly formatted with tiny internal/root directory meaning you run out of app space whilst the main storage is empty if your app can't install outside of the main internal partition.

the 7" galaxy tabs (tab 3 I think) are no better than the cheap Chinese ones the screens are poor and they are dog slow with limited battery life.

basically no matter what you buy make sure it has a good clear screen preferably oled for clarity and battery life, if you choose a cheap tn lcd you will regret it the polarisation is always crap and the viewing angle make them tiring to look at.

I've been looking at the linx 10 and it seems pretty much what I'm after. It's on amazon, with the keyboard, for £130. Is anyone aware of a better offer?

EDIT: I'm going for the 10". It's to replace my old Ipad 1 which I use mainly to watch movies when travelling. Good battery life is a must.
