Hi
If I drop my bike when I am on my own, am I able to claim on fully comp bike insurance or does someone else have to be involved?
Thanks

With "Fully Comprehensive Cover", if you bin your bike you can claim on your insurance policy.

Yes, fully comp is cover for the bike whoever is at fault.

if you drop it pushing it into a parking space then the damage is probably less than your excess so you may as well just fix it and say nothing.

If you undertake someone turning left who shoves you and bike through a stone wall the insurance company should be paying repairs to the car you damaged, the wall you damaged and the bike you damaged

We'll take the piss out of you however.

Nothing to say that TPO will be cheaper than fully comp for the OP. Remember, insurance prices work in mysterious ways!

Whether he'd be financially better off claiming should be drop his bike would depend on what bike it is, whether 'drop' means very pretty much stationary or whether it means a crash where he doesn't stay on the bike and it hits the ground.

With cars fully comp's normally cheapest, or a little bit more than third party fire & theft. With bikes (for me at least), third party is a lot cheaper than fully comp.

A guy at work just started riding and took out a fully comp' policy. I pointed out that it was a) with MCE and b) his excess was practically the entire value of his scooter.

Workmate dropped his Bandit multiple times, on both sides, messed it up a treat.

Claimed on his fully comp insurance, got it all fixed up less his excess.

Claimed on his excess insurance, got his excess back too.

You don't want to be behind him at a buffet either, he'll engulf anything worthwhile like a basking shark.

As CaNsA says;

But they'll get the money back from you in your next years premium, so it's not worth claiming for your own 'fuck ups' unless it's a real major deal.
You could buy extra insurance to cover excess and possibly for any premium increase but the cost for a new biker would make that prohibitive.
This is one of the reasons the 'older heads' always say 'buy something cheap' for your first bike as there's something like a 75% chance you will drop your first bike/big bike just moving it round a car park or the garage (hopefully with little to zero damage). You'll probably want to change the bike after a year or so anyway....

worthwhile doing quotes for both as, god only knows, but fully comp can occasionally be cheaper or not much more.

No, get fire and theft if you can't afford to replace the bike. Sods law = you get tp only, you get it stolen within 2 weeks with locks on.. TPFT it'll stay around with no security.

I'd consider the cost of replacing plastics etc against the difference in premiums and excess.

I'm on 3rd party only.

The excess for theft makes it a bit daft to cover for it. I'm a bit picky about where I leave it and figure if a crash is my fault to the extent of needing to claim, I'm probably not going to want to ride it to work the following day.
