I've just been quoted £450 for front fender, the tank, the rear bit around the seat and the front nose of Yamaha FZS600 Foxeye. Cherry Red metallic no stripes or masking. The original is silver. That means more work probably? I have no idea.

Is that ok as a price?

Any good Reading, Berkshire, Surrey body shop that can do that cheaper or I am asking too much?

My father recently had his tdm resprayed. Thats all panels excluding the tank. It was about £200. My friend got his vfr400 resprayed blue for £150 that was panel's tank and everything. £450 seems steep to me

Have you looked into vinyl wrapping or hydro dipping?
Either of these methods could work out cheaper

I had my tank done by a guy in his spare time so no rush, that was stripped back, dent repaired sprayed and lacquered for £40.

£400 sounds okay if its by a professional in working hours but if you found someone doing it in their spare time itll be cheap.

also not to slate another member but don't entertain paintpot on here, i asked for a tiny rxs tank strip and spray £140 Very Happy

The place my friend got his vfr sprayed was a place called Splash. It was also a car wash but a few of the people knew how to spray paint professionally.
Ive seen my mates vfr and the job they done looked pretty good, there was a slight run in one of the panels but the rest of it was a decent job with no bloom in the lacquer.

The place my dad got his TDM sprayed was near Polmadie in Glasgow, they usually repair cars for insurance companies. This again was decent job, it was sprayed metallic black with speckles throughout the paint work, again no bloom in the lacquer and no runs. He prepared all the panels himself and heated them before spraying.

This is just my experience of getting something sprayed. So to me personally it seems steep. Although it could be that its been
cheap, and my dad and friends have been getting good prices.

Definitely look at car repair and painters too. They can often be cheaper than bike specific sprayers and if it's a simple one colour job, then it's not hard or specialist work to do.

It depends and it depends.

There's a world of difference between a professional bike painter recreating the original paint job and a back street car repair place doing a quick blow over with whatever generic colour they happen to have in the gun at the time.

For example, about 15 years ago I had my RD350 resprayed by Dream Machine in the original paint scheme. That was over £300 then – just for the tank and side panels.

Whereas my local car repair place will spray over the same bits in generic gloss black for about £120 cash, provided you do your own prep.

You pay your money and take your choice but, as ever, you get what you pay for.

Seems to me to be about the going rate for a professional prep. then spray in a special finish.

Not cheap but not taking th piss either.

I'd expect to pay £500 quid for a naked bike and £1000 plus for a faired bike.

OP, do your own prep. to keep the costs low or pick a less ''interesting'' colour.
There's always the DIY option. You pick colours in the paint shop, they mix it up for you and put in spray cans or ordinary cans, if you want to use a kompressor to spray it. Then you'll only pay for the paint and cans. Doing your own prep. is easy enough.

Question: how durable are the vinyl wrapping and hydro dipping methods? Especially on the tank, as you rub it with you knees all the time.

Thank you guys you've got me thinking about the wrap Thumbs Up

I had no idea you can do that at all.

Long story short DIY vinyl wrap will be the way to go.

I've ordered nice Vvivid XPO chrome red:

Read up lots on wrap application.

Practice on a small bit first, don't just jump in and try to wrap the tank first go.

Pre-prep and cleanliness is vitally important. Remember you can only stretch wrap, not shrink it.

Here's a VFR tank I wrapped using branded 3M wrap. Was not simple!

Wrapping is not a simple task on most of the motorcycles. All the curves and angles make it nearly impossible to do it right. It won't be easy to do it nice around the lights, that's for sure.

Keep us posted, I can't wait to see the results. I personally would try to prep. it and paint it my self. It's not that difficult. One word of knowledge though, take it easy with the filler, more you put on, more you're gonna have to sand down later. Smile

Mates rates for a tank and two fenders with a custom mix of paint, repro yamaha vinyls and some chaos stars instead of tuning forks cost me i think £350. All the vinyls were lacquered in and much clearcoat effort was done so you couldn't feel the vinyl underneat. I think it would have been about 550 if he didn't like me. That was the inexpensive guy with a hard to find unit way up north. Did a nice job on the tank.

Won't vinyl wrap on the tank have wear issues on contact points?
