Today I did do... snowshoeing around a frozen canal lock

The Trent-Severn Waterway in Ontario is 386km (240 miles) long, and has 45 locks, including some engineering marvels like the Peterborough Lift Lock and the Big Chute Marine Railway (basically a funicular for boats).

I've visited the Lift Lock but not the Marine Railway, yet. This little adventure is all about snowshoeing around Lock 20 (Ashburnham) which connects the waterway with Little Lake in Peterborough.

We haven't had much of a winter in Southern Ontario (the huge storm didn't touch us) so I haven't had much chance to use my snowshoes so far.

I've actually gone swimming at this beach on the summer. They make an effort to cut back the underwater vegetation which you will otherwise become seriously entangled in, as you discover if you swim outside of the designated swimming area.

These are Muskoka chairs (or Adirondack chairs if you're American) and the seat of choice for relaxing in the great outdoors.

I was amused by the use of bicycle locks to secure the lock gate mechanism.

There was some water running in still. I don't think the ice in the lock was very thick. A family friend who lives further north said the ice on his lake was about five inches thick this winter.
