If you were king for a day and could change, amend or create one motoring law to help bikers - what would it be?

As a commuter biker myself I know some of the problems out there, so I'm looking for something more than 'ban car drivers', 'only allow cars on the road between 9pm and 6am' Wink

Thanks in advance everyone

Andy

I'd make 'design' students do their own homework.

Hello and welcome to BCF.

OK then, I'll play. At a national level, treat powered two wheel vehicles exactly the same as unpowered ones in terms of what facilities they can use.

That means full access to: bus lanes, "cycle" lanes (how often do you see a pushbike using them outside of London), advanced stop lines (ditto), and off-carriageway bicycle parking.

Monarchs can change the law?! Shocked

In a DAY??!! Shocked

OK, in this fantasy land let's see.... ummmm..... something practical like enact the blanket right to use bus/taxi/Zil lanes.

Why the hell would I want to change motoring laws?

I'd bring back that medieval law thing where I get to fuck any bride I want on her wedding day.

Since it's my most hated motoring misdemeanour...

Anyone seen on a mobile phone at the wheel can be dragged from their car and have it explained
American History X style using the nearest kerb that it's very selfish behaviour using a phone while driving.
The injuries may be to either to fingers or mouth depending on which phone related offence is committed.
Either should make the offender think very carefully about doing it again and free up court time to boot (geddit). Thumbs Up
In addition any nearby concerned member of the public should be sanctioned by law to perform this undoubtedly
necessary task as the Police are already far too busy keeping multiculturalism from boiling over.

Easy one for me. Bring back the original motorcycle test from about 10 years ago with the same rules with power restrictions. No need for more tests to go up levels, make them time served. Remove the need for Mod 1 test centres and have the knock on effect of making biking more affordable.

Ok.

Driving test to be multi-vehicle.

In order to be allowed to drive/ride on UK roads you have to have passed a test in your vehicle of choice AND completed a CBT-style certificate of basic competancy in other vehicle types.

For sake of argument, let's make vehicle types include car, powered two wheeler, bicycle and light commercial. Perhaps with an off-road "experience" in an HGV.

i think that anyone caught driving less than considerately within sight of a motorcycle should be 'cashiered' on the spot. i'm talking the whole nine yards. license torn up and thrown in their faces, epaulettes cut off, swords snapped over a knee. drummed off the carriageway . tar and feathers to be carried in all traffic officers vehicles

That's going to be expensive, and be a cost that will apply almost exclusively to those with the least money.

Shut up or I'll have your traitorous head on a spike outside the tower!

[/King]

No it would be a fully inclusive cost to everybody.

A universal detriment.

You want to drive on the road. Prove you can.

I'd ban aurtomatic only licences too. You can only do your test in an auto if you have a disability that makes it necessary.

Everything using the road should be able to keep up with the traffic, so lift the power restrictions on small bikes, get cycles back on the path and tell horses to fuck off.

Horses should not be on the road either walking or *or* in a horsebox (which in my experience tend to be driven by jolly-hockey-sticks types who get behind the wheel of a truck twice a year and trundle around at fifteen in case Dobbin is uncomfortable). Want to move a horse? Airlifted in a sling under a helicopter should be the only option.

I also reckon HGVs should be confined to lane 1 only. But it's an opinion that's proven controversial in the past.

Biking specific - I'd get rid of the 50cc at 16 rule. 2 day CBT which somehow incorporates an attitude test (one day refresher next time round) and then straight on to a 125.

All police vehicle sirens would be removed and if a copper wants to exceed the speed limit in a chase he has to scream the word 'Nee Nar Nee Nar' at the top of his voice with the windows wound down or his evidence will be inadmissible in court.

If I remember my history right, that is what made Mel Gibson rise up with a load of Jock savages and overthrow their english overlords.

As I`m King of road and traffic law for the day?, Hmmmm? how about all scamera vans MUST be bright pink and all those involved must wear a pink uniform.
No scamera vans are allowed to "hide" round a blind bend or obscure themselves from the traffics view.
All scamera vans MUST put up warning notices up at least a quarter of a mile away to warn drivers.

Hmm? might still slow a few cars & bikes down, but wont be half as sneaky.
Speeding is still addressed and we all get a good laugh at them Thumbs Up
