OK, so here goes,
I seem to be the only guy in the UK I know, who rides an ST1100 every day at my age. AWESOME BIKE . I'd literally rather ride it than my ZZR1400 (for sale soon). Comfortable, smooth, powerful enough without the fear of death or licence loss (ZZR comes to mind again) and maybe most importantly, will take the other half, in comfort, without too much issue. Minimum of 300 miles a week, every week. commuting and leisure (is there even a difference?)
UNTIL RECENTLY...
When we started going on more trips/ tours, it became apparent that it really is more difficult than it should be carrying camping gear and the BOTH of us. It's the tent, sleeping bag, matt and cooking equipment that does it.
SO.. I've been looking at the potential of Goldwings. The GL1200 or maybe the GL1500. though I am on a tight-ish budget.
Has any one has experience owning an st1100 simultaneously with a wing? Is it completely wrong for a 22 year old to be considering this? Are they actually any better for 2 up touring than the Pan? I'd love to be able to tour Europe without one of us moaning every 250 miles about how sore we get.
Thoughts please!
Thanks ____________________ Current crop: ST1100, NTV600 (rat), ZZR1400, cb250/400n. |

So, how big a top box do you have on it? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

OP, of the four bikes you've named, I've owned three of them (not had a ZZR1400) and I had my 1200 Interstate when I was 20, so you aren't the only one.
Obviously I have no idea how big all your kit is, but if you cant get it on a Wing, you need smaller/less stuff; I think the 1200 top box was 63 litres, the 1500 is bigger, plus the panniers on either are bigger than a Pan.
Personally, I would try hard to stretch to a 1500, it's an infinitely better bike than the 12. They do have a few known faults (there's lots of internet resource to guide you) but a properly sorted one is a joy to own.
Oh and keep in mind there's a lot of bollox talked about Wings, largely by people who haven't even sat on one, let alone lived with one, so ignore them and do your own thing, you won't be disappointed. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

I got a 6 man tent, 2 sleeping bags, 3 changes of clothes and some other junk on a Street Triple.
Adding that to a Pan on the way back was so simple. There was room spare. A lot of room spare.
You need to look at what you are taking. It's too much I did 10 days in Spain on an R1 with soft luggage and never felt I needed more space. |

I don't understand how you are failing to fit it all. If you're going with a missus, you've obviously got some pics. Put them up so we can see how the bike and your camping setup is.

I'm struggling to see why you need more room?
Bandit 600, 2 up, tent, stove, essentials, food etc for two people fitted fine and was comfortable enough for both of us. We used a pair of soft panniers, tank bag, rucksack and just tied the tent to the pillion grab rail. Even managed to take a lock and bike cover with a fair bit of space left in the tank bag.

Did the missus sit on the tank with her legs over the bars?
