Did my CBT yesterday. I know you can't fail but they recommended more training, so I'm back on Saturday to hopefully complete it this time.
I didn't do anything stupid, I think I just need more confidence and work on slow control of the bike. I also struggled getting the thing on and off its stand (mostly on) because I'm only slight and couldn't master the technique. I was a complete novice before yesterday, apart from a taster lesson 2 years ago. The other learners had all ridden before.
Really hoping I manage to complete it the second time. Do many people have to go back more than once?

Most decent riding schools will make adjustments to accommodate the slowest learner, so you should have been offered a different bike if you couldn't physically manage the stand on the first one - and more time to practice slow manoeuvring before being let loose on the road.

There was a chap on my CBT course that couldn't get the hang of the slow stuff on a 125cc bike, so the instructor made him swap it for a 500cc scooter and with the lower centre of gravity, he was fine in no time.

If you are otherwise happy with the school, book another attempt with them - after watching a few videos on YouTube, and maybe spending some quality time on a push-bike.

Hold the handlebar and rear of the bike, stand down on the centre-stand and just let the bike raise up and backwards. Barely any lifting required.

If you can't do this, hit the gym.

With a nod to arry, I'll take it at face value.

Don't sweat it, you're in good company. I did it in two goes.

DVSA doesn't think that a 1 day CBT is sufficient for a genuine first time learner either - they're strongly suggesting that it should be viewed and marketed as being as long as needed.

Doing it with eternaLearners is a problem, as with the best will in the world, there will be pressure on you to keep up with cocky pedbois who just want their DL196 renewed.

It can seem overwhelming at first, with a lot of new controls to deal with. But when you go back refreshed, things will have sunk in and everything will seem a lot easier and more natural.

Remember that you're paying for training, so if in doubt, ask for advice or for more time to practice at your pace. If you weren't comfortable with the instructors (they can be a bit shouty) then you're free to take your business elsewhere.

On the centre stand, eh. Some bikes don't even have one, it's not a critical skill. You can figure out the technique yourself if you have to.

Relax, smile, enjoy. I guarantee that by the end of the road ride you'll be grinning and ready for more.

You'l find that the next time you go in you'll be shocked at yourself for not getting it the first time. Sometimes the brain just needs a reset. The CBT is an awful lot of info to take in.

This is normal. I see it every day, even from bigger framed people. A little experiment, Stand up, walk to the stairs (or a chair if you live in a flat) put your foot on the step (or seat) and stand up straight, Do it really slowly, feel that muscle in your thigh working? That is the same muscle you use for getting the bike on the stand and it is pretty much the same technique.

I have had a good few people not ready for the road, It happens. Best advice is to not sweat it. Do not let it get you down. You'll find next time it'll go fine and you will wonder what the fuss was about.

I am booked back in for Saturday, I've just been and paid for it.
I feel like I did achieve something yesterday, I went from wobbling and both feet eveywhere to being able to set off with my right foot on the rest. And I managed the slalom and a u turn, which I didn't think I would, so I was pleased with that. Balance isn't my strong point really, I do mountain biking, but not the technical stuff.
I enjoyed the day, and the instructors were lovely, very chatty and patient.
Hopefully something will have sunk in, and I'll find it easier on Saturday.
My partner's DT125 (which hopefully I will be using soon), has a side stand, not a centre stand.

I passed mine first time but to be honest there was no way I was ready to hit the road unsupervised. I could barely change gear correctly (kept hitting neutral) and just didn't feel confident on the road.

I bought a 125cc shortly after and learnt the hard way by just going out and trying not to get killed. Didn't help (or probably did actually) that I went to pick my bike up 20 miles from my house in the pouring rain with a shite helmet...non waterproof jacket and jeans on...it certainly made me learn quickly how to ride in the wet.

But don't worry about going back for a 2nd day...you will find it will all sink in better 2nd time and you will breeze it.

Enjoy

Great to hear that, it makes a big difference. I had Mr Shouty in the yard but Ms Patient on the road ride and it was night and day.

It will, you'll have had time to process it and the controls will feel a lot more natural.

A tall 2 stroke might not be the most suitable bike for learning on, mind.

Also, custard test.

Thanks for the advice Smile
The DT feels ok size wise, I'm 5'6" with long legs. I can get my full toes on the floor. Gonna have a practise on a car park before I attempt to use it on the road though!
If I had any custard, I would have eaten it already lol, I love custard.

2 of my mates had to go back. 1 of them went on to get his full license, and the other gave in and stuck to scooters on L plates, then gave in some more and sold that and got a car.

Haha I don't like scooters, and I've already got a car licence, just not my own car! Going for a bike 'cos it's cheaper for commuting, and it's kind of a bucket list thing for me too, it's just taken me longer than I'd have hoped. But, I'd rather be safe and confident Smile

Took me a while, I was in my late 20s, and had been ill for a long time during which i'd pretty much forgotten how to ride a push-bike let alone riding the DT i had as a teen. Very much bucket listing. You'll get there in the end. DT is an awkward thing to learn on, mine had been ineptly tuned by the PO and the line between stalling and wheelie time was kinda thin.

When I did CBTs I would regularly have people that were not ready to move on in one day. It's not easy when you are trying to help three people at a time and those that needed a bit more were always offered what ever time they needed on another day free of charge. You'll be surprised how easy it is to get a bike on the stand once you get one to one training. It's all technique.

I made my own son do a two day CBT. He was visibly upset when he didn't get the paperwork straight away but he did tell me at a later time that he was glad that I didn't let him loose when he wasn't ready.

It's still a challenge getting my bike onto the centre stand, and i'm most of the way to shreck sized and more clumsy. From what i recall it was more awkward on my CBT YBR, and even worse on the DT. However, if bikes are lowered in some way, even if it's just winding off the preload, it gets harder to use the centrestand.

The YBR i ride on my cbt was centrestand only becase it was slightly lowered so thu took the sidestand rather than shortening it to match.

When you get a proper bike, if you lower it in any way, consider finding a sidestand on ebay and having a local friendly welder take a corresponding amount out of it.

I have now passed my A2 tests, and the cbt is still the most terrified I have ever been on a bike. Far too much to take in as a complete novice (as I was), especially if you have not driven on the road before either.

I did get it done in a day, but I spent my afternoon on the road trying not to die, which isn't really the aim of the training. It dosnt help that 125s are difficult to ride as well.

Far better to take a couple of days and enjoy the experience than stress about getting it done and rush things.

As for centre stands, I did it twice duing the cbt, and intend to never do it again. What a pain in the arse, especially as many big bikes don't have one anyway.

Certainly an "as new" bike will have a side stand only or both stands but rarely if ever a centre stand only. I still value my cbt training for making me learn to use the centrestand, however difficult, as after 4 years of sidestsand only, the last 3 of which have been shaft drive, i have a chain to clean and a centrestand is less of a drama than a pitstand.
