Hey guys, I have a yfz450 with no engine and I've been looking for an engine that would fit in it without too much adjustment modifications.

I found a CBR 400 engine and I would love any information if it would be possible to place it in my yfz.

Thank you in advance.

You'll make almost any engine fit with enough work.

That said I wouldn't suggest it, the weight difference alone between the original 450 single and the cbr4 engine would be enough to put me off, and I've no idea why you'd want to either to be honest, I'm not sure a revvy 400 suits an MX frame for any use.

Think you might have a slight problem with the chain run unless you offset the engine about 3 cylinders worth. Doh!

Lots of things can be made to fit, but this is less 'made to fit' than 'completely re-engineer the frame to the point where you might has well have not bothered'.

a single cylinder MX engine is very narrow. A 4 cylinder across the frame engine is wide. I don't think any more than that needs to be said really.

Is it school holidays or something today? Rolling Eyes

With just an angle grinder and a sledge hammer, it'll fit no problems. Thumbs Up

Considering the question in another light, "can I plug and play cb400 engine?".. No

"Can I build a custom bike from a yzf and cb400?" Yes, but if you need to ask here then don't try to. It'll cost more time and money then a new bike if not two bikes. Surely you can pick up a yzf engine?

Would like to see it though if you do?

I've seen a Kawasaki KMX125 with a Bandit 400 engine fitted once, years ago in a magazine (might have been Streetfighers), but I don't know how it handled?

I think it's a shame that no manufacturer has built a fairly light street moto (cant call them supermoto's as G doesn't like the term for road biased bikes), but with say an R6 engine fitted?

It would be no heavier than something like a Ducati Hyermotard 800 or similar, but have smooth revvy delivery and with much shorter gearing than the engine would have in a sports bike.

YFZ is a quad, which probably makes the whole thing ten times harder.

Hadn't noticed that, read it as YZF both times!

Oops, I failed!

Well you don't want a CBR400 motor in a quad I would suggest anyway.

I remember driving home last summer from Aston Birmingham and at a set of lights hearing some sort of grunty loud superbike coming up the outside, or so I thought. It was two black dudes wearing bandanas on quads, with what looked like car tyres on. The first bike I reckon had a bandit 600 engine in, well a silver SACS lump anyway. The second even louder more menacing one had a ZZR11 lump shoehorned in with a shorty can. Neither of them hung around when the lights changed anyway. Laughing

I would say it makes it substantially easier; offset sprocket takes care of any chain run issues and weight distribution almost becomes an irrelevance.

Have you seen a quad frame? At least with an MX frame you can hang the engine underneath in an auxiliary cradle. You'd have to throw the frame away and start again.

I'm looking at one now, a YFZ450 in fact.

Engine is set well back from where it would be on a bike (presumably to keep the weight as central as possible) and it's held in by some fairly convoluted brackets, mounted to a couple of support bars, which are welded to the main frame.

There's loads of room ahead of the motor, the support rails could be removed and reshaped (or just removed and replaced with fabbed motor mounts) and height shouldn't be an insurmountable issue.

The extra width could put the gearbox sprocket outboard of the frame, ergo the chain will be where your left foot/ankle usually is, but again, that can be worked around.

Not saying it wouldn't take a bit of work, but it doesn't look as hard as it first sounds.

Edit: normally, if I were putting a car engine where it wasn't supposed to be, I would get out the tape measure before doing anything.

In this case, I would just chuck it in the hole and see where it touches.

Hey guys, thanks for all the help I appreciate it but I finally decided Im not going down that road. Best choice for me personally is to find a yfz or yzf engine, fix it as it is intended to be.

Then sell it, and buy a Raptor 700 which is more suitable for road use anyway and if I decide I want to throw an r6 engine in the Raptor then it would be a little bit easier I believe.
