I've been on the hunt for new rubber for the CG and I keep seeing "Heidenau" tyres available, apparently made in Germany but I've never heard of them.... am I just poorly educated or are they an unknown?

I've gone for Metzellers anyway but curious

I put a Heidenau 90/80-18 on the front of my Gpz305 and it was fine at motorway speeds and under braking. Can't say that I really tested the limits of the handling, but... CG.

Heidenau are formerly Pneumant, they made the OEM tyres for MZ's back in the day.

I had a pair on my monkey bike and they were fine.

Used to be Pneumat, who were the OE supplier for MZ and a total joke. Times have changed however, and I am a big fan of the K65s which suited my Suzuki GS125 very well and gave it impeccable road manners, the way it no longer tried to stand up under braking was a revelation. Lasted 10K miles on the front too, while always having more grip than I knew what to do with unless the weather was over 30C when it went a bit slimy under hard braking.

Saying that, I also tried a K44 on the rear and thought it was pants, shuffling about and generally not gripping yet it wore out as fast as much stickier stuff. Heidenau also have something of a following in the trail bike scene as they make good stuff in weird sizes so are often among the best available. Those K65s though.. Drooling

nowhere.elysium has them on his GS650 and thinks they're the dog's danglies.

I'm normally a bit of a brand tart when it comes to tyres, but having inherited a new Maxxis on the back of my XJ, I'm prepared to accept there might be things worth looking at, on the path less well travelled.

I once used a £30 quid Chinese tyre on a gt550. It had such little grip that on anything but excellent roads it would spin up the rear in first and second. It was amazing fun.

It's true, on both counts. Good touring tyre, decent grip (bearing in mind that I'm not going for record-breaking cornering or lean angles), nice price. Also, they do them in the weird sizes that the GS needs, which was a major deciding factor Laughing

Almost every overlander i meet here in South America is running the Hidenau K60 scouts as a 50/50 Road/Dirt tyre that lasts ages. The big BMW riders especially love them as once you go over a 140 rear the centre compound lasts longer than your bike.

I tried a pair and to be fair they are not bad, for UK roads there is probably better options though.

Also had the K60 Scout 'M&S' on my Dr650. Front was super duper in the the snow, lasted about 3/4k miles, I didn't really take note Sad The rear lasted probably less than 2k. Could of got more out of them, but I really squared them off going to work via the m1.

I've just put a fresh "winter" K66 on the 250 but I don't think I'll get chance to try that in any snow, bugger.

I think the K60's are probably made by Carlsberg, best 50/50 tyres out there, I've ridden them on a few bikes at speed and in the muddy stuff.

Another vote for the k60s especially the si02 in winter. Very sticky in cold wet conditions.

Both Hiedenau and Mitas (Czech) are very popular with the overlander community. I've used them on two of my last three trips.
