Hi ladies n gents
I'm a BCF virgin lol.
Had many bikes but none in the last 20 years.
Street tripple and Ducati monster look appealing to me.
Too old for a sports bike.
Am in a limited budget too.
Any thoughts much appreciated.
Cheers
Ken boy

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
That's my biggest worry really.
If I spend 2k would I waste more on maintenance and depreciation than 5k on a newer one.
When I've had it for a bit may want a change.

Hello Thumbs Up .
500cc + , hmmm? that`s a broad criteria!

So why not make a list of what you would like and then ask the Mighty BCF for their input Thumbs Up

Really depends on service history and what it's had done recently before you bought it. Quite possible to spend on a newer bike too if it's newer but just below mileage of a bigger service... eg. Ducati's belts etc. Tyres , chains fork seals etc will all wear out at various points in a bikes life. Check the service intervals for whatever you're interested in and get one that's just past a service and has had it done, with good documentation to prove it.

Also depends on rarity and desirability of whatever you're looking at. Ducati's, Triumphs etc can hold value better, but the market is flooded with SV650s (which is why I bought one) so they have a lower supply and demand ratio second hand = lower price, to an extent.

As already mentioned you'd be best to narrow it down to at least a short list before looking at pros and cons of different ages of certain bikes.

Spend 4k on a Street Triple. You'll not need anything else. Smile

Uh, depreciation works the other way. A £5K bike will cost you more just sitting there than a £2K one.

You're not going to get a Street Triple for anything like that though, unless it's been down the road on both sides, stolen, recovered, subjected to public inquiry, stolen again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters.

What you will get for £2K is an ER6n. Check the exhaust for splits at the collector and the frame for cracks at the engine mounts, if it's solid then have it and enjoy it, and if you want more later it'll be easy enough to sell on without losing much if anything on it.

Or FZ6 or SFV650/Gladius or CBF600 or...

Are other motorcycles off the table? Street Triple is a quite recent motorcycle, so the prices are still well high up. You could try a Speed Triple (955/1050), as it's older it'll cost less to obtain.

Does the "limited budget" only apply to buying it or are you looking for low cost running too?

MPG, service intervals / costs, insurance will help you narrow it down if $ matters.

Doesn't even rhyme. Laughing

Different strokes for different folks. With 20 years away just get anything that takes your fancy within the budget, work out what you like and dislike about it, then move onwards and upwards.

What have you had before?

I think a Street Triple will be too much for you if you've not ridden in 20 years. It's got the same power to weight ratio as the first FireBlade, and it's a lot of bike.

Why not try something like a Kawasaki ER6?

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

You reckon? Its a bike that gives you a rush and runs out of puff quick. I'd recommend that over an underpowered wheezy wagon...

I found the low down and mid range power very satisfying on yours. I could see how it could catch somebody out easily. My R1 does nothing at the low-range RPM, so when pottering around I would have to consciously bring up the rev range before a flick of the throttle could catch me out. A low RPM flick of the throttle just makes lots of noise Laughing I thought your triple was very confidence inspiring though; the brakes were sharp and it gave a nice amount of feedback during the corners.

The only way to learn how to handle more power is to have more power.

It's in my parents garage at the moment, but black, I think 36k.
