Went into a dealer today to look at a street triple. There it was looking all sexy... 2010, 11k miles... 4 owners...

Now as this is my first bike I'm looking for advise. If I was getting a car with 4 owners I'd walk away. Is this different for bikes? It comes with full service history.

Anything else to look out for and/or ask while I'm about it...?

Street triple, a bit common Very Happy

Seriously that's not unusual. Do your usual checks (old MOT's, HPI*) though.

One of those owners might be the dealer if they pre-registered it.

So could be 3 real owners in 11k. A change of owner every 18mths possibly (we are only just into 2016).

My SV had a change of owner every 18mths. 9 owners when I bought it. It was a bit of a shed with many bodges and broken bits.

Bear in mind the 12k service is unlikely to have been done. It includes the valve check and possible re-shim (mine needed it).
You might want to factor that in somehow as it's £500-£700 roughly if you go to a Triumph garage, nearer £400 at your local bike shop.

It's more normal with bikes. My 1993 CBR600 had 13 previous owners in 2007, and was one of the most reliable bikes I've owned to date.

Good question on owner numbers, looking at bikes myself,
I'm looking for a 125 though so numbers will probably be high

Also what is the auto trader trick?
Could do with knowing that

So generally more owners is not necessarily a bad thing then. The bikes come with hpi certificate and 12 months mot.

I may ask to see if they can do the 12k service for me... Razz

Just picked up a bargain winter/commuter/luggage touting Honda CB500F so I don't have to keep OCD cleaning my Street Triple in the winter.

Honda main dealer - less than 6 month old with only 87 miles on the clock, but 3 previous owners. 1 was original dealer for pre-reg, 1 for first real owner who 'didn't get on with it', and 1 for current shop who seem to have reg'd it to them (no idea why at all).

I quizzed the sales robot about it and they must have been wanting to get rid of it before new spring stock came in as another £200 came off the already good discount for a basically new bike with a healthy chunk of manufacturers warranty still on it.

So I would quiz owner numbers where you can, but it's not such a big deal as with cars. Remember, more bikes are bought with cash than cars these days (play toys etc.) as most cars are financed in some way. If your car is on a 3 year lease with balloon then there's more reason to hang on to it. As bikes are often leisure items people will chop them in much more frequently and will be less tolerant of something they don't completely like. IMHO of course..

Thanks!

TBH it's like an underpowered, wheezy, dull and sensible handling tractor (admittedly a well screwed together one) compared to the ST3..

..so absolutely perfect for the intended purpose! Wink

Go to sell the vehicle on auto trader and it'll flag up any markers when you enter the registration

- Go to the autotrader site (think it needs to be on a desktop PC to work)
- Enter a reg & mileage and create your ad'
- Enter year & body type (can be any) and go to the next step

If it's a write-off it'll come up as above. Only seems to do it with the desktop site on PC though (doesn't show up on my phone & tablet)

Just messaged the dealer and got a response.

They have stated the car will have a service prior me picking it up. I assume that will include the 12k service bits? They also have no information on previous owners other that the last which was a woman.

Is there anything else I should be asking?

Never assume anything, their service will probably involve clean oil and filter if you're lucky.

Who is the dealer? You don't have to say, but maybe somebody has used them before and has an opinion on their trustworthiness. For example, I've used Tamworth Yamaha before and they've earn't my trust.

The Street Triple is a good bike in my opinion. 4 owners wouldn't worry me so long as the condition and service history check out. People tend to own bikes much more short-term than they do cars. I've only ever had 1 bike that I've owned for more than a year.

If you want the service as a part of purchasing it, don't just assume. Explicitly make it a condition of you purchasing the vehicle that you want the 12k service carried out, and insist on having the paperwork to back it up.

When getting a dealer service (24k) done on my bike, I checked out a few dealerships before committing to anything. Specifically I peered through into the workshop to see what was going on. Seeing a mechanic removing things from a customer's bike and using a cloth to keep things clean as he went along was a confidence inspiring factor for me.

I'm looking at using the CMC group. I'll email them!

Also does anyone have a service schedule? So I know what should be done and when?

They have stated there's a full service history which would equate to how many stamps... 3?

What's the 12k service, headset bearings and valve timings? I'd want that done, and I am inclined to agree that the dealer would probably do a minimal service before selling a bike, just like the 'special' MOTs they slap on.

More likely 2 - 500 miles and 6k with the 12k not done yet. You can try but I wouldn't fancy your chances of getting the big 12k service done by the dealer, not properly anyway.

Most of the 12k is just checking things, replacing as necessary. It's more time consuming than anything. I'd doubt anything really needs doing, like valve adjustment, so it's more like a comprehensive check up.

I found the full service manual. Bit annoying to find as mostly owners manuals come up on searches. If you want a link to it, feel free to PM me.

I insisted on valve clearances being done on mine after the dealer I bought from phoned the dealer that did the 12k service to be told it hadn't been. I paid a little extra to ensure that it was in fact done before I took delivery, as the bike is on 14k and I don't want to have to deal with that just a couple of thousand miles into ownership. I said something like, "well, I've heard of back street dealers who say they've done it and then don't, so you will make sure you do it, won't you?" Not much else I could do, but they assure me it has been done...

Well I've found out it has had 3 services. The last one at just over 10k. It was at a triumph main dealer so I have messaged them to see what it had done... Is there anything more I can do?

Get them to agree to do oil, oil filter, air filter, and valve clearances.

Watch them do it.

Otherwise there is no chance - no chance - that they'll go near the valves.
