I am intrigued by MV Agusta's Turismo Veloce: https://mvagusta.london/shop/turismo-veloce-800/

One thing that puts me off (apart from the price!) is that I wonder how easy it would be to sell it 2nd hand.

In London there is only one MV dealer, in West London (Richmond); I am not aware of any other mechanic servicing MV, and this alone may easily put off quite a few potential buyers.

Plus, it seems there are so few MVs around in the UK that I don't know how many Londoners even know the brand. Not to mention that MVs are harder to insure: many insurers refuse to insure MVs, and the ones that do charge much more than for other bikes in the same price range (eg VFR1200, or BMW GS1200).

What do you think?

Have you ever seen 2nd hand MVs on sale? Do you know of anyone who has bought one?

In fact, I was thinking that the dealer's finance options may be worth considering (even though I could get a lower rate at a bank) because at least there's a minimum price at which you can hand back the bike after 4 years.

I'd imagine owning one in London would be "asking for it" - Get a used one, they hardly ever seem to be ridden the price drops a bit.

It could also be that usually they catch fire or the bearings fail or you can't find a dealer without travelling halfway round the universe.

But why would they be stolen more than, say, the BMW GS 1200, which is one of the most sold bikes (in the UK like in most of Continental Europe), and which can cost even more than the luxury version of the Turismo Veloce? If anything, I'd expect the GS 1200 to be stolen more (no one is going to nick a Turismo Veloce for parts).

The Turismo Veloce is so new there are only a handful of used bikes on sale, none of which within the M25. Maybe in 1-2 years there will be more used ones available.

Because the GS is dull and the MV is exotic and different. Joe McScrote will get a lot more satisfaction stealing something different and "race bike", one up on his mates when he posts photos of himself all over Facebook sitting on it.

Well, that's an assumption. There are so few MVs around (let alone Turismo Veloce) that I very much doubt insurers have enough data to substantiate that, yes, MVs get stolen (proportionally) more than more expensive German or Japanese bikes.

I would expect professional thieves to focus their efforts more on the most sold bikes than on something like an MV, unless maybe the thief is part of an international network which ships and sells stolen bikes abroad - in which case he's no longer Joe McScrote, though.

There are not many MV Agustas because they don't produce that many motorcycles, nor they have such big marketing campaigns as other manufacturers have. Plus there's no cult following either. Even in the central europe there are not many of them. I've seen 2 MV A's in my life and those were the early models 1000 F4 and an Brutale, both from around 2005. Those are still quite expensive.

I must say I'm not too sure what these stories are meant to prove.

A unique £ 50k bike was stolen. I'm talking about a £12-14k bike (the Turismo Veloce) which is cheaper than most versions of the GS 1200, one of the most sold bikes in the UK and Europe.

Two gentlemen were arrested for stealing bikes and loading them onto a van. Again, not sure how relevant this story is. I guess the gentlemen would have stolen anything worth stealing. If they had come across a GS and a Turismo Veloce one next to the other they would have stolen both: i doubt they would have targeted the Mv and ignored the GS.

But you can't compare a £ 50k unique bike with one that is worth £12-14k!

Seeing as your question cannot be quantified, other than saying could be easy could be hard, depending who is looking to buy a bike when you are looking to sell, the answer I provide is a solid 5 out of 7.

MV Augusta don't make any sense if you want bang for your buck. Like above, you can get a Multistrada 1200 which is twice the bike for not a lot more penny's. But it is exotic and full of character.. The only MV I'd consider is a brutale but even then I can think of other bikes that do the job better, (whilst not as grabbing in the looks department)

Btw, one thing that is very unique in the Turismo Veloce is that the side panniers do not protrude , i.e. the width of the back of the bike with panniers on is the same as that of the handlebars. This makes it, as far as I know, the best bike with side panniers for filtering. Again, these things are totally subjective, many people may well not care at all, etc, but to me it seems very convenient.

The africa Twin can cross a continent offroad it's a totally different bike. The only reason you buy an MV is for the looks/brand, there's nothing wrong with that but don;t try to make out it is for something else. You can get an Equivalent bike for thousands less Tracer/Tiger etc. And as has been said the Multistrada would be a much better bike for that sort of money.

PCP probably makes the most sense, although their finance example of £175 a month gets you just 2,000 miles a year. That's a best case of £1 a mile if you do exactly 2,000, and upwards if you do either more or less.

Now, who here likes a good story about amortisation?

Most answers have, in fact, been totally, completely and blatantly off-topic, but I would say they are informative to the extent they show little interest in the brand, and therefore confirm my impression that selling a 2nd hand MV is hard.

The GS 1200 is one of the most sold bikes in the world, yet how many owners ride from the UK to New York via Russia, like Ewan McGregor did, and how many use it only to ride in the city and for the occasional weekend?

To each his own, of course. Tastes and preferences are very subjective. I know very well there are cheaper alternative out there (and I agree the Tracer seems excellent value for money). To me, the Turismo Veloce seems a nice bike, which is more expensive than some of its competitors, but not completely out of whack, i.e. it's not the equivalent of a Ferrari!

Nope, quite the opposite. I basically said I had the impression that selling an MV 2nd hand would be hard, and asked if you agree.

The discussion then went off-topic, to the merits of the Turismo Veloce vs other bikes, and to the merits of insurance premia for the TV being higher than those for more powerful and more expensive bikes.

Just because a handful of people wouldn't buy one new or used does not make it hard to sell. Your aiming at a smaller audience of course, but you will find someone who is in the specific market for it and knows what they want and what needs to be done with them.

Look at Ducati, slightly more mainstream these days but the same principle.

If I wanted a turismo vagina I would go out and buy one, not try and justify £4K extra than the closest (arguably better alternative) by saying it's slighter narrower than another.

Buy a real MV and when you come to sell it, it will sell easily and you'll make some money.
Buy the Cagiva version and you'll loose money, struggle to sell it and struggle to find dealers/spares.
